Just a friendly reminder that libraries are free.
Not “free trial” free.
Not “free with ads” free.
Not “free if you give us all of your data” free.
But free free.

A child reading a book about football tactics is reading.
A child reading a recipe book is reading.
A child reading the back of a cereal box is reading.
We have an extraordinary habit of deciding which reading counts as real reading.
And an equally extraordinary habit of doing it in front of the child.
Every book counts. Every page counts.
Stop gatekeeping.

I think it’s a crisis that kids are growing up with no knowledge of Robin Hood & Merlin, Charlotte and Babar, Ratty and Badger and Long John Silver. In the words of Katherine Rundell, “We need to be infinitely more furious that there are children without books.”

Most of life occurs in those ten-minute stretches where nothing seems to be happening. You’d be shocked at how much reading you can get done while you’re standing in line or riding the subway. There’s no such thing as “performative reading” when we are in a literacy crisis.

“Sit in a room and read--and read and read. And read the right books by the right people. Your mind is brought onto that level, and you have a nice, mild, slow-burning rapture all the time.”

Nothing is much better than a cup of hot coffee or tea on a cold night, and an entertaining novel to read.

Rainy days are just the universe saying: cancel plans, grab a blanket, and read books.

People say there’s no magic in books but the fact that you can string words together to create a series of visions in someone else’s brain is still our greatest achievement as a species.

Replying to @SoledadFrancis
I grew up in a house with no books (and no readers), in a town with no bookshop. I read voraciously. Thank goodness for good librarians and teachers. I wouldn’t be a reader (or an author) today without them.
