Dreze simply illustrated the grotesque concentration of wealth and the staggering inequality between labour and capital. Neither becomes any less consequential because the billionaire happens to be Indian. When you cannot challenge the argument intellectually, you attack the scholar by resorting to insinuations about research funding, racial whataboutery and the familiar bogeyman of Western interference. The difference between economic scholarship and ideological servility could not have been clearer.
His work was funded by Ford Foundation and McArthur Foundation. How many million years would it take to those "100 workers" to match billionaires like Henry Ford and John McArthur? Or is this calculation meant only for the non-white billionaires? Saving Indian souls - backed by western business - is a very old game.....

Smita Patil left us when she was just 31, but in that brief period she gave us unforgettable performances in Manthan, Bhumika, Sadagati, Chakra, Aakrosh, Mirch Masala and even Namak Halal. Few had her range and craft! Born on this day in 1955!

Give yourself a little time to celebrate the pushback, the march, everyone who worked on the ground to make it happen for INDIA, everyone who spontaneously joined in, the fact that it transformed Delhi from a jail to a breathing city, for a day. The hot takes will happen, the nitpicking will happen, the suggestions for a way ahead might be helpful. But for the first time in years, you had a glimpse of what a free country might look like, how transformative it might be, if we weren't held back by violent fascism. Take a moment for relief and joy too. (And then follows the hard work of holding the police, forces and home ministry to account. Respect for all those following up on every detention, beating, sexual assault, suspension of rights that was inflicted on Delhi this black weekend.)

What a country we have become! A big shout-out to all the young lawyers who ensure the release of all detainees every evening! This fight goes on because we do not fight it alone. Journalists reporting the truth despite unlawful repression, lawyers holding the police to the law, lakhs and lakhs of first-time protesters fighting tooth and nail, giving actual blood to keep democracy alive.

This is not AI. A snapshot of a moment of freedom in an otherwise fortified, barricaded, almost miliatrised Delhi. Sometimes imagination can be the forerunner of reality. Imagine there are no barricades and young Indians can run freely on the roads.

No shade on any of the other youth leaders in India, but you can tell that @neha_aisa is a well formed left wing cadre with a degree in theater. Hard combo to beat.

Important clarification No CJP leader has signed any bond that says they will not protest any more. The bond refers to refraining of breach of peace. But participating in a peaceful protest is a Constitutional right and DOES NOT breach peace.
Have Dipke, Das and Ranka signed some bond saying they will not protest any more?

This was in the air all through the last two days -- despite the unbelievable security, despite the repression. Never underestimate the people's love for freedom and their country, never.
New Delhi's Connaught Place right now. @betwasharma says that protestors are not backing down despite thousands of police and paramilitary forces.

Just the number of security troops deployed in Delhi boggles the mind. This is just a fraction of the deployment outside Bangla Sahib yesterday. Delhi rn is prolly the world's most militarised capital.

At Chang Gate in #Beawar Rajasthan, where thirty years ago in 1996, a 40 day historic dharna laid the foundation for Indias #RTI movement - today a protest to save the right to vote. From #JantarMantar to #ChangGate the streets are people's parliament. You can't police democracy!
