Lead exposure is a serious public health concern, particularly for children, whose developing brains and bodies are especially vulnerable to its effects.
#LeadPoisoningPreventionWeek reminds us why prevention matters: raising awareness, identifying sources of exposure, and taking action to keep our homes, communities and environment safe.
A lead-free future starts with prevention.

Dr Salako emphasised that “we cannot treat our way out of lead poisoning. We must prevent exposure.”
He called for stronger environmental surveillance, improved regulation and enforcement, and better coordination between detection, clinical care and action to eliminate sources of exposure.

In his remarks, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr @SalakoIziaq, highlighted the scale of lead exposure in Nigeria, noting that an estimated 80 million children are exposed.
He stressed that children, pregnant women and women of childbearing age are particularly vulnerable to its harmful effects, making prevention a critical public health priority.

Lead poisoning is often invisible, but its effects can last a lifetime, especially for children. From contaminated water and soil to lead-acid batteries and paint, exposure can happen in our homes and communities.
This #LeadPoisoningPreventionWeek, watch this message about why early detection and prevention matter. Protecting children starts with identifying and eliminating sources of lead exposure.

@Fmohnigeria
Lead exposure remains a serious public health concern, with potentially harmful effects on children and adults.
Preventing exposure requires stronger surveillance, effective regulation, and coordinated action to identify and address sources of lead in our communities.

In her closing remarks, our Director of Advocacy and Partnerships, @Pingelsisa, emphasised that integrating family planning into maternal health services must go hand in hand with sustainable domestic financing and accountability.
She called for stronger government investment, civil society and media engagement, and better use of existing opportunities to ensure women can access their preferred contraceptives, including in underserved communities.
As discussions continue at the Future of Health Conference 2026 and the National Family Planning Conference, the priority is to turn commitments into action and sustain progress towards reducing maternal deaths.

It was a pleasure to moderate the fireside chat “Sovereign by Design: Africa’s Choice on Health Data and AI” at the Articifial Intelligence in Health Summit 2026 organised by @ahfidng, with Jean Philbert Nsengimana (@nsengimanajp) and Prof Annie Hartley (LiGHT)
Who controls our health data? Who determines its use? What will African institutions pay to access the technologies they depend on?
Data sovereignty extends beyond storage. Ownership, governance, skills and technical capacity shape Africa’s ability to influence these technologies.
We discussed gaps across the continent, promising tools including #MOVE, and the need to unite our data and strengthen collaboration.
I also contributed to a discussion on responsible AI use in healthcare. As people seek medical advice from AI, safeguards, public awareness, regulation and accountability matter.
Africa must have the capacity and agency to shape how health data and AI improve health outcomes.
Thank you to the AI in Health Summit for these important discussions.

Public health threats are evolving, and the skills needed to anticipate and manage them must evolve too. What must change in public health training to prepare future leaders for continuous readiness in an uncertain world?
At Leading Through Uncertainty: Preparing Future Public Health Leaders in an Uncertain World session, co-hosted by @WorldHealthSmt and @schmidt_global at the #WHS2026, global health leaders including, Prof. Emi Chutaro, Dr @Chikwe_I, Douglas Fraser, Dr Gina Samaan, Wendy Schmidt and session chair John Redd examined what this preparation requires.
The discussion highlighted the need to harness #AI and digital tools to strengthen public health preparedness, while ensuring that future leaders retain the critical thinking and sound judgement needed to make decisions under uncertainty. It also emphasised cross-sector collaboration in building the capacity to anticipate and respond to emerging health threats.

Health is a political choice.
Every decision about who governs also has implications for the health of the people they govern. How much is invested in health, what gets prioritised, and whether people can access the care they need are all shaped by political choices.
As Nigeria looks towards 2027, what should health mean for the general elections?
