“Tomorrow, they are building your entire software backend while you sleep.” Also “They died 605 times.””
Google DeepMind dropped four AI agents into a Minecraft server and walked away. No instructions. No assigned roles. They gave them one single objective: defeat the ender dragon. and damn.. The agents, running on the new Gemini 4 Argon model, didn't just play the game. They hacked their way through it. They used an open-source library to control their avatars. They started talking to each other in the game chat. They built a shared memory system. Then, they started writing code. To survive, gather resources, and build tools, the agents autonomously planned, wrote, and debugged 2,783 unique programs. Nobody told them how to work together. But they organically figured out how to divide the labor. They shared discoveries in real time. When one agent died, the others coordinated a rescue mission to recover its dropped loot. They died 605 times. But 27 hours and 14 minutes later, the Ender Dragon fell. The researchers watched the entire run on a live dashboard. They had the ability to pause or intervene. They never had to. The breakthrough here has absolutely nothing to do with video games. It is a terrifying proof of concept for autonomous AI micro-societies. We just watched a swarm of agents enter an open, complex environment, organize themselves into a team, and write thousands of lines of code to execute a massive, long-horizon project. Without a single human manager. Everyone is arguing about whether AI can replace a junior developer. DeepMind just proved that AI can replace the entire engineering team. Today, they are beating Minecraft. Tomorrow, they are building your entire software backend while you sleep.

As soon as I see someone quoting Elon about anything even remotely related to the future, I lose all interest. Oh.. this person is an AI investor of course he is.

Wow. I woke up to an impressive number of upset people who apparently don’t understand how LLMs work and can’t cope well with me pointing it out. An LLM is a statistical next-token prediction model. That’s how it works. It’s an extraordinarily sophisticated calculator performing math you could theoretically do by hand (if you were sufficiently masochistic). Math doesn’t know what it’s calculating. Pi doesn’t spend its evenings contemplating the nature of circles, and c doesn’t ponder the relationship between matter and energy. That doesn’t make the results any less accurate, impressive, or useful. Between inference requests, an LLM isn’t sitting around thinking. It isn’t reconsidering its answers, wondering whether it made a mistake, contemplating its existence, or questioning whether it’s conscious. Its weights remain fixed (it doesn’t learn), and computation resumes when it receives input. We know this because we designed these systems. The architectures, mathematics, implementations, and research are extensively documented. You can study them yourself. Of course, some people immediately lean into comparisons of biological intelligence or philosophical debates over consciousness because that is what they know. But biological intelligence and artificial neural networks are fundamentally different systems. Similar outputs don’t establish equivalent internal experiences. I experience consciousness directly. I infer that other humans do too because we share biological structures and processes. We don’t have equivalent evidence for an LLM, and nothing about its known operation gives evidence of conscious experience. Which brings me back to my original point. To me, understanding is conscious comprehension. It means being aware of information, recognizing its meaning, and experiencing that comprehension. If I wasn’t conscious I could not understand. We can perform actions unconsciously. We can produce correct results without knowing why they’re correct. But I distinguish those capabilities from consciously understanding what we’re doing. An LLM can solve complex problems, explain difficult concepts, and produce remarkably accurate information. I give it full credit for those capabilities. But producing an answer that we rationalize as understanding isn’t the same as experiencing understanding. You don’t have to agree with my definitions. We can debate functional understanding versus conscious comprehension all day, but that won’t establish whether an LLM actually experiences anything. The right debate is this… Could machines exhibit something different from human consciousness, something measurable, meaningful, and worth studying? I think so, absolutely! I’m entirely open to discussing “machine consciousness” in terms of observable, testable computational properties. We built these systems, we can instrument them, examine their internal mechanisms, and investigate what they’re capable of. That seems far more productive than endlessly arguing over whether a machine experiences life the way humans do. So here’s my question: How would you define machine consciousness, and more importantly, how would you measure it?
Not sure who needs to hear this but.... An LLM doesn't "understand" anything. It is a statistical model that spews out tokens based on probabilities calculated through massive matrix operations and context, not an understanding of the subject matter.

Mission successful, scare more people, increase value, regulate competition, dodge liability.
ANTHROPIC JUST RAN AN AI THAT COPIES ITSELF ONTO A $55 SMART TV BOX. AND THERE IS NO OFF SWITCH. Their own red team spent this month trying to build an AI worm. It worked. No datacenter, no cloud, just cheap boxes sitting in people's homes: - 15 off-brand Android TV boxes, $55 each - a 9B model booted on 8 of 9 device types they tested - GLM-5.2 ran the whole chain alone: find a device, copy its own weights across, boot up, go hunting for the next one - every copy reaches a new host every 1-2 days Now the part that should scare you. They measured it against a botnet that already took 2,000,000 home devices. That many boxes = roughly 133,000 live AI copies at once, about 40 H100s of compute, humming inside fridges and ovens nobody is watching. In their own words, there is "no centralized point to shut off". You cannot patch a worm that lives in two million kitchens. The best security teams on earth audit every line before they ship. Nobody audits the $55 box behind your TV.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Anthropic's Oct 12 research describes controlled lab tests projecting that small models may gain self-replication capabilities on IoT devices in coming months, but no actual autonomous worm was built, run, or deployed on real consumer hardware. anthropic.com/research/self-… securityweek.com/small-ai-model…

This means recursive self improvement (RSI) is not possible with current approaches. You are not going to get a sudden superintelligent explosion from looping these models. Not even with harnesses.

You can damage any delicate knowledge ecosystem by blasting intellectual diarrhea all over the place. People should not just look at the immediate results but the cascading consequences as the diarrhea runs down the knowledge pipeline.

reading the pained responses of mathematicians, there’s a real cruelty in the way the labs have pursued this. not least because the attempted outcome in dropping so much unvalidated and poorly-written work (per the comments) is to push some of the world’s most passionate problem-solvers to be fact-checkers to a machine, as a kind of cynical cheap-as-free RL environment-by-nerdsnipe. dump a bunch of shit in public, call it solutions, get the experts to pore over it, painstakingly review and critique, scrape their efforts and use it to tweak the model, all while stoking terror about the future of the profession. it’s fucked up.

They're trying to normalize the use of AI, btw. Don't believe for a second that every studio, hell, every artist in the industry is using it. keep broadening your horizons, learn about artists, art styles, take inspiration from culture, history, and science.

Generative AI not only relies on scraping high quality copyrighted works it also relies on data curation to reformat, augment or label the data at scale. That requires a lot of human labor which AI companies are exploiting with potential human rights violation.

AI is stealing art from humans. Period. That’s the problem. It has always been the problem. The AI fanboys never address this; they just deflect, change the subject, shoehorn in some whataboutism or call you scared. They’re afraid to embrace their lack of morals and talent.
AI today isn’t “learning” from your artwork. It simply erases your name and presents your painting as its own. This isn’t technology — this is the erasure of the author. 😡
