Never waste a good tragedy. Everyone was quick to pile on the blame for the attack on Helen Haines.

Let’s not let media and some unscrupulous journos off the hook.
Remember this incident when Murdoch putrid hack chased Katy Gallagher out of the airport and into the car park on a Sunday evening. It was filmed by The Australian & published on The Australian’s website.
Creepy.

With the events of just the last few days coming to mind - the disgraceful attack by LNP MP Angie Bell on Ann Aly “suggesting” Aly “be stoned in the square” .. plus the toxic reframing by One Nation of Jacqui Lambies’s health condition as a very public sick joke - which Pauline Hanson later described as “satirical” and that Lambie should “just get over it” - many of us have recoiled with disgust at the depth of controversy and outrage that some politicians are determined to stir up to grab a bite of notoriety. There seems to be no depth that can’t be plumbed to rage bait, divide and desensitise the masses towards misogyny, racism, prejudice and hatred. Eventually there comes a point where the consequences outweigh the provocations.
Many would now be asking themselves questions about the unconscionable attack on Independent MP, Helen Haines outside her electorate office today that has left her in a critical condition and her family and supporters in shock.
How could something like this happen to somebody like Helen Haines, one of the most uncontroversial, one of the most hardworking and one of the most stable MPs in our federal parliament?
When do we start to see the consequences of many different actions over a period of time and draw reasonable conclusions as to what aids and abets displays of hate and violence in our communities?
The old adage “sticks and stones will break your bones but words will never harm us” - doesn’t take into account the power of our modern mass communications, our media - the influence they hold and the malignant intentions of those behind the power of the spoken and the written word.
What is said by politicians, what is said in the media and what we are exposed to online does affect us - very often negatively - especially those who are more susceptible and more likely to be primed and triggered by rage baiting, misinformation, AI lies, gaslighting, culture wars and punching down on vulnerable groups of people.
When do we look at the negative consequences of multiple actions from multiple sources and decide that enough really is enough?
PM Anthony Albanese has called to “turn down the temperature” in Australian politics following the attack on Helen Haines. It’s good advice and those with a modicum of commonsense are listening and understanding - but what about those protagonists who continue to capitalise on the same outrage, anger, division and hatred that has drip fed us into these outcomes? Do you think they’ll collectively pull their heads out of their festering orifices to smell the roses and tone it down?
No… because these are the outcomes that they work towards. They aren’t surprised. They aren’t shocked. Like Jacqui Lambie says - “nastiness is pushing us towards anarchy”.
…Which given the escalating tensions around the world provided by using similar populist strategies - may have an element of truth regarding an anarchical outcome.
See it for what it is. This kind of violence is not acceptable. It is also not inevitable. Governments and people do have to stand up to the drivers of populist politics. The world cannot survive continued violence. There is no happy ending that can be born out of hate.

Pauline Hanson has today insisted she was “not aware of the content” of her vile cartoon—but watch her yesterday tell Jacqui Lambie to ‘get over it’ and ‘have a laugh’ about ‘women suffering from this thing’🙄
No bigger liar or hypocrite than Hanson. #auspol

Hi @corybernardi
You showed up to the rally you refer to, and you (a grown-ass man and elected official) - laughed whilst filming children and calling them "trannies", and "incels".
With all due respect, sit the fuck down.

What a cop out the Media in General are trying to sheet the blame for yesterday’s attack on Helen Haines on “Social Media” FFS certainly SM is a problem but The Main Stream Media are the major perpetrators of The Hate Speech cycle and it didn’t start yesterday but a Decade ago

The media’s refusal to scrutinise its own is a serious problem.
Journalists are increasingly participants in the stories they’re supposed to report, yet their colleagues give them a free pass.
An industry that routinely preaches accountability while practising none.

The Incident and Suspect
The Attack: Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang and seeing Ms Haines pinned between two vehicles.
**** Reports indicate the SUV drove past her, made a U-turn, and returned to deliberately strike her, causing severe lower-body and leg injuries.
Bystander Intervention: Local citizens stepped in immediately. A nearby bystander pulled the driver from the vehicle and detained him until police arrived within minutes.
A knife was allegedly discovered in the suspect's pocket or vehicle.

Let me guess, @AlboMP’s new laws on cyber bullying don’t extend to Lambie?
I can’t believe a woman would go after another woman like this. Prolapse uterus is a real health concern for many women.
@PaulineHansonOz owes Lambie an open apology and remove those misogynistic cartoons! 😡
“If you think it’s a laughable matter about women having problems with their reproductive system then you be my guest, and you stand by her. But seriously, enough is enough.” Lambie.

Jeff Kennett closed an estimated 17 hospitals and cut 1,400 beds.
Bracks/Brumby built or rebuilt 4 hospitals and added between 700 and 1,000 beds.
Baillieu/Napthine built zero hospitals, closed zero hospitals, added 100 beds, and couldn't resolve a nursing dispute that dragged on for years.
Andrews/Allan built or rebuilt 12 hospitals and added over 2,600 beds.
Now, Jess Wilson’s policy to quasi-privatise health services, redirecting public money into private health—is facing an $880 million shortfall (according to The Age). What a bloody joke.
Is our health system perfect? No. Does it need significant improvement? Absolutely. But do you believe the Liberals will actually do anything to fix it? I think you know the answer to that.
You can’t trust the Liberals with our health services. Ever. Put the Liberals last.

British Jew here.
Yes, sadly genuine antisemitism exists .
However. Opposition to the state of Israel’s war crimes is not antisemitism. Israel is playing a dirty game carrying out its atrocities in the name of all Jews.
Not in my name.
