Shamonda is an orthobunyavirus in the Simbu serogroup, first isolated from cattle in Nigeria in 1965.
Culicoides biting midges are its likely vectors, supported by virus isolation from field-collected midges, though experimental transmission has not been demonstrated.
France reported the 1st documented human infection w/ Shamonda virus. Patient was severely immunocompromised & died.
