New paper on detecting migration in caribou, ferruginous hawks & grizzlies (grizzlies didn't migrate). Led by @ualbertaScience PhD graduate @P_R_Thompson [sorry, no polar bear migrations in this one - stay tuned].

I'd like to take this opportunity to pivot to an iconic US endemic we *KNOW* still exists and that is *GOING TO BE EXTINCT* in the next 30 years if we don't do something drastic, fast.
The Saltmarsh Sparrow:
The ivory-billed woodpecker, a bird presumed to be exctinct but one that has become a kind of Holy Grail for American birders, still exists, a new study suggests. But some scientists are skeptical, saying the evidence is on this “very poor video.” nyti.ms/3Ml9gvW
In the most respectful way possible... I would like a word with the reviewers (and journal editor) who didn't bat an eye at the incredible lack of reputable evidence for the IBWO's existence. How has this manuscript been accepted? Am I missing something here?

I’ve just made it home from the @LiberEroFellows retreat in Haida Gwaii. Seeing the natural and cultural beauty of the islands and the Haida people was a life-changing experience. It was also wonderful to make connections with all the fellows. See y’all soon!

ALT The oceanside view of the Haida Heritage Museum in Skidegate, home to some fascinating information about the history of Haida Gwaii and its people. Visitors arriving at the museum by sea are greeted by an impressive assortment of totem poles, modeled after traditional designs from Indigenous groups all over the archipelago.
The last time Canadian grad students got a raise (~20 yrs ago), I was still learning how to go down the slide and hiding in the pile of leaves in my backyard. The next generation of Canadian scientists must be paid above the poverty line! #SupportOurScience

Congratulations soon to be Dr. Thompson (assuming the defence goes according to plan this coming Thursday as I'm certain it will: the dissertation is amazingly strong). Doing @ualbertaScience proud! More exciting research & conservation contributions to come.
