This morning, @SalmonCoast released a report presenting one approach to assessing the status of #salmon pop'ns in the Broughton Archipelago, northeast Vancouver Island, and surrounding mainland inlets.

I am trying to get in touch with a former (I assume) @NOAAFisheries scientist, Gary Winan, but his old email appears to be deactivated. Anyone on here able to connect me?

Huge for early career researchers. Congrats to MANY folks working w/ diligence & persistence over YEARS to get this done. This must set new bar for unis, depts, profs in years to come. Science blossoms w/ kind, creative, curious minds & financial insecurity strips all that away.
Budget win for @SupportOurSci ence —after 20 years of scholarship stagnation the government has finally agreed to allow our best and brightest grad students to live at or above the poverty line!

Reads like a Bradbury novel.
Fossil fuel giant BP has plans to drill an exploratory well in a marine refuge off the coast of NL. Wilkinson said if BP finds oil while exploring the area, there is a possibility the marine refuge could be altered and “removed as a conservation area.” 🧵nationalobserver.com/2023/06…

Funding announcements investing in research at @uvic and other institutions are exciting. But w/out updating standards for what is acceptable to pay grad students & post-docs, this important work will be done, in part, by folks paid below poverty line. #SupportOurScience
Thrilled to witness the announcement of this historic investment in research at UVic. Thanks to @FP_Champagne and all our partners. Let’s get started!! @UVicResearch

#IAmAGradStudent and #Budget2023 means that the evidence that informs this government's so-called "evidence-based decision making" will continue to be produced on the backs of research trainees paid below the poverty line. @cafreeland @justintrudeau #SupportOurScience

This budget is disappointing, but there are opportunities for funding agencies & unis to pick up slack & apply pressure of their own. If # of trainees plummeted because @NSERC_CRSNG took the lead and funded EACH AWARD at a level that supports a human being, (I hope) we'd notice.

Science is best served by kind human beings with curiosity & creativity. Financial insecurity gnaws away at all of that. Looking to my home universities to back students & post-docs up on this. @UAlberta @ualbertaScience @uvic @uvicbio

About time this city kid built some character and our "spring" prawnz survey delivered the ingredients. Fortunately, I get to work with a crew of real tuff & capable cookies who know how to have a laugh, even in a blizzard.

Blizzards & fierce outflows included, it still feels like quite a gift to work in these waters & amidst these mountains. We were rewarded with a few heart stirring days of warm sun & gentle winds.

Particularly limiting when most of the data for a species comes through a commercial fishery... 🦐
