My apologies, Orwell had the foresight to say refugees. Immigrants is how the Tories refer to them. Here is the passage I referred to. It must be well over 30 years since I last read 1984, but this passage is seared into my mind.

I seem to remember in Orwell's "1984", Winston Smith going to the cinema to see the proles being entertained by footage of immigrants being machine gunned in boats. I've always said the modern Tories seem to see 1984 as a political how to do it manual, than a warning.

We have a legal & moral responsibility to refugees fleeing famine, war and violence. They are not the problem. The problem is the dangerous routes they must take.
