🌊 How can we inspire the next generation to choose a career at sea?
A key question during the #PillarsOfTheSea4 project meeting this week.
Common EU standards could help remove barriers; making it easier for fishers to put their skills to use wherever they are at sea

On #WorldMaritimeDay, we celebrate the people who turn maritime policy into practice every day at sea.
In fisheries it is particularly important to emphasise that life at sea requires a different approach to that of land-based policy.

🐟 Lina back at sea!
During the North Sea herring summer fishery, she examined growth of the herring and how their fat content changes throughout the year.
Together with our fishers, she's helping collect valuable data that supports long-term fisheries research.

This week, our Secretary of Labour Affairs joined the launch of the #PillarsOfTheSea4 project in Rome.
The project strengthens Europe's leadership in improving safety, working conditions and social standards across the fishing sector. 👇
In his speech at yesterday’s annual Herring Party of @NLatEU in Brussels, PFA President @timheddema highlighted the importance of 20 years of the @MSCecolabel for North Sea herring.
He also spoke about the health benefits of this iconic fish for current and future generations.
This week, we hosted the General Assembly of the @LDAC_eu in The Hague. Part of the programme included a visit to a freezer trawler and, of course, Dutch herring.
Constructive dialogue within Advisory Councils remains essential to sustainable fisheries and global food security.
Met de nieuwe Uitvoeringsagenda werkt de pelagische sector samen met betrokken partners aan een toekomstbestendige visserijsector.

Size doesn’t define sustainability.
Freezer trawlers target abundant stocks under science-based quotas, using highly selective sonar and onboard freezing to fish efficiently.
The result: wild-caught pelagic fish have one of the lowest carbon footprints of all animal proteins
Fish don’t stay in one place. Pelagic fish migrate a lot and experienced skippers know exactly where to find them!
That’s why you’ll sometimes see several vessels in the same area, like right now with the herring fishery in the Channel.
Take a look at the other fishing seasons:
PFA fisheries researcher @Linadenijs gave a presentation at the Catch Welfare Platform Conference about our research into fish welfare.
Events as this, involving relevant stakeholders, help to guide the next steps.
