10 June 1944. 642 men, women and children were murdered by the German Waffen SS in the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, France. The village was never rebuilt and featured at the opening episode of the classic ITV documentary series World at War.

Just heading off to visit Oradour-sur-Glane for the first time, a location I have wanted to visit for a long time.
‘Down this road on a summer day in 1944, the soldiers came. Nobody lives here now. They stayed only a few hours. When they had gone, the community, which had lived for a thousand years, was dead. This is Oradour-sur-Glane, in France.’

It's nearly Candlemas, traditionally the very end of the Christmas season, which joins a last look back to midwinter with the first glimmer of spring. Time for a few more medieval carols: aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/…

This is probably the oldest surviving Nativity. 4th/5th century. Carved in marble and on show in Athens. Note the absence of Mary and Joseph. Just the ox and the ass in attendance. Interesting how priorities change in religions art. I deal with it here. zczfilms.com/films/

The algorithms are making it a lot harder to spread the word about these online talks. Although numbers are still reasonable, it would be a great help if folk were able to give the 30 December event a quick share 🙂

Hmm? 🤔 So how's that one working out.

One of the great things about living near the Forth at this time of the year is the geese migration. Tonight’s showing was one of the best I’ve seen in years. Here’s a short snippet.

Today is Michaelmas, the autumnal feast of the mighty St Michael the Archangel - in medieval tradition the guardian of high places, weigher of souls after death, heavenly warrior against the forces of evil, and defender against the dark. aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/…
