During the war in 🇧🇦, children were among the tens of thousands of victims - killed by shelling, sniping, shooting, and other means. More than thirty years later, in some communities, the names of the murdered children have long been carved into stone, while in others, they have not yet been given the right to be part of such a culture of remembrance.
In our new analysis, Amra Kamberović Mujanović and Valentina Josipović discuss this topic through interviews with survivors' groups, practitioners and academics.

Over the last two weeks, our Fall internship term visited the International Commission on Missing Persons, the State Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Center for Investigative Reporting. From the hard but incredibly vital work of finding missing persons and its role in the the transitional justice process, to the challenges and successes of prosecuting war crimes and protecting the witnesses, to the importance of uncovering and addressing corruption and economic crimes, our interns gained an understanding of the different pieces that contribute to the overall work of improving our society. We thank the @TheICMP , the State Court, and @cinbih for their time, and their willingness to answer our questions.
In the 1990s, the UN took too long to respond to the crimes committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Yet the Security Council did establish the ICTY, free of any veto, and the Tribunal brought some accountability for war crimes. Today, that kind of consensus seems out of reach. According to Oxfam, 27 of the 30 vetoes cast on the world’s most protracted conflicts concerned Palestine, Syria, and Ukraine.

Last week, #pcrcbih took part in the Civil Society Forum in Prishtina, the official civil society platform of the Berlin Process.
The Forum brought together civil society organizations, think tanks, and European and regional partners to shape recommendations ahead of the Berlin Process Leaders’ Summit in Podgorica, under the overarching theme of regional cooperation, resilience, and the European future of the Western Balkans.
For us as a peacebuilding organization, it was important to be in the room, contributing to the conversation on the nexus between peace and security in the EU enlargement process.
🙏 @OpenSocietyWB (@ADobrushi, @LuraLim, @MervanMirascija), the governments of 🇽🇰 & 🇲🇪 for organizing and hosting such an important gathering.

My visit to @SrebrenicaMC stays with me. Honoring the victims means preserving the truth, confronting denial, and teaching the next generation. Thank you, @SenatorShaheen, for reminding us that “never again” is a responsibility we all share.
NEW: @SenatorShaheen discusses her visit to @SrebrenicaMC and the importance of remembering the Srebrenica genocide to ensure it never happens again.

Interns from the @PCRCBiH visited ICMP’s office in Sarajevo to learn more about ICMP’s work in the Western Balkans, where ICMP has assisted states in accounting for more than 75% of the estimated 40,000 people who went missing during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia.
The discussion also focused on ICMP’s global mandate and its role in supporting countries to address the issue of missing persons.

Kako mladi u 🇧🇦 formiraju političke stavove i koliko poznaju sistem u kojem glasaju?

Last week, at the invitation of former President of Kosovo 🇽🇰 @atifetejahjaga, #pcrcbih joined the international conference "Partnership for Change: Women Transforming Systems – Advancing the Prishtina Principles 2026–2035."
Our President, @VelmaSaric, spoke on the panel on reparative justice, conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV), and accountability. She stressed that meaningful justice must be measured by what happens in a survivor's life, not only in the courtroom, because memory keeps the truth alive in public life long after the courtroom empties.
Documenting survivors' voices is central to this work. Some of our projects on documenting CRSV and genocide survivors testimonies include:

Today is the International Day of Non-Violence, and the final day of the 12 Days of Activism for Peace.
More than thirty years on, survivors of wartime sexual violence still receive uneven recognition and support depending on where they live. Many are now in their sixties, seventies and eighties, and time is running out. A permanent, survivor-led memorial, the first in Bosnia, would say to every survivor: this happened, and Bosnia remembers you all, equally.
In a new op-ed, Rebecca Hawkins and Velma Šarić make the case that it is time Bosnia built that place.

Biljana Plavšić, former member of the Presidency of Republika Srpska, was sentenced by the Hague Tribunal in 2003 to 11 years in prison for crimes against humanity. She had previously pleaded guilty and accepted that thousands of innocent people were victims of organised and systematic action to remove them from areas the Serbs considered their own. Under the plea agreement, the remaining counts, including genocide, were dropped.
After serving two-thirds of her sentence and being released from prison, she withdrew that admission, claiming she had made it only to avoid a lengthy trial.
Withdrawing the admission does not erase what was said before the court. It was given knowingly and without coercion, and it remains a lasting record that one of the highest figures of the wartime leadership knew the scale of the crimes and their consequences.
Her death does not close the question of accountability or the question of memory. The courts have established what was committed. Our task is to keep those facts accessible, especially to young people, and to not allow them to be erased.
