Since 2016, farmers with corn acres enrolled in @PCM_Farming who use cover crops are more likely to use reduced or conservation tillage.

Cover crop fields in this @PCM_Farming sample applied less #nitrogen and were less likely to exceed the university-recommended Maximum Return to Nitrogen (MRTN) rate than non-cover crop fields.

With anhydrous near $908/ton heading into 2027, your nitrogen rate matters. On central Illinois farms with highly productive soils (2020–2025), the best returns came at 151–200 lbs N/acre. Farms applying 200+ lbs averaged $22-36/acre less. @ilcorn

2/ Moving to MRTN rates this year may have larger impacts on #profitability, as nitrogen #fertilizer #prices are high. @PCM_Farming farmers know about MRTNs but average application rates suggest many farmers have chosen not to adopt those rates.

PCM data analysis has helped Jason Whalen determine which practices have a positive ROI for this operation. His ground currently needs little to no synthetic phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, while nitrogen rates are at or below MRTN rates. Read more:
Starting small on less productive acres gave Whalen Farms room to learn — and eventually cut fertilizer costs across 2,000 acres. agweb.com/news/crops/illinoi…
