During our root dig tour, we saw clear evidence of rootworm feeding damage in RNAi traited fields. Seems to be a wider issue based on reports from growers. Something to keep an eye on for next year.
Some great results in organic corn treated with biocontrol nematodes applied this spring. This organic field is on a corn-beans-corn rotation with significant northern rootworm feeding in the untreated check. Root injury scores of 1 to 2.5. Outside the untreated check, corn roots were clean with very light feeding. 6 corn plants in each pile.

First tassels are coming out in Eastern Iowa.
A good indicator that peak damage is happening from Corn Rootworm.
@PBiocontrol will be doing a root dig tour the last week of July starting in NW Iowa and moving East.

Rootworm damage on the Vorceed trait. Typical 1-1.5 node feeding where the associated RW Bt is ineffective due to rootworm resistance. Rootworm larvae continue to feed after ingesting a toxic dose of RNAi causing this damage. In general terms, one node of root damage =10 bu loss

In Illinois this week pulling soil samples to test for @PBiocontrol nematodes. Most of these fields were applied a year or longer ago. A one time application to control Corn Rootworm can last for decades!
