Day 9: Where do R version names come from? The current version is 4.4.2: Pile of Leaves. Check yours by running R.version on your console. Internet chat suggests these names are all inspired by the Peanuts comic. And sure enough… #r #rstats #charliebrown #peanuts 🥜

The Omicron timeline is incredibly condensed, the speed of science and communication mindbogglingly fast. This is what I have so far 🧵 23/11 - Tom Peacock tweets about a cluster of SARS-CoV-2 genotypes with many mutations 24/11 - South Africa reports B.1.1529 to WHO

NEW: people worry when they hear "40% of hospitalisations are fully vaxxed", but this chart shows that's actually good news. The more people you vaccinate, the higher their share of hospitalisations, but the *total* number in hospital is a fraction of what it would otherwise be

Nice tweet by @IsaacATFlorence a couple weeks ago to remind us that “surveillance of outbreaks” in England is actually more “surveillance of outbreaks that are prioritised, managed, and then recorded”. Too many steps removed to use this data as evidence of transmission risk!
Although Twitter doesn’t need another thread of individual thoughts on the latest PHE variant technical briefing, as half the team behind the new outbreaks and clusters data, I feel it’s important to highlight a few things about this data which are missed in discourse here 1/

There you go, more combined plots, in a different way from the patchwork package I shared last time. Props to my colleague Soeren Metelmann who wrote most of this one.

I’m really proud of these tech briefings. We are ~40 scientists across many teams, working intensely to push out the latest and most useful data weekly. It is a fantastic collaborative effort and exactly what I hoped I’d be doing one day. #Science!
