10 YEARS OF THE TURKISH MAARIF FOUNDATION: A DECADE OF EDUCATION OR TRANSNATIONAL REPRESSION? Yesterday, the Turkish Maarif Foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary at a ceremony attended by Türkiye’s President. The event highlighted the Foundation’s international expansion and presented its activities as a major achievement in education. Yet behind this celebratory narrative lies a deeply troubling record of political interference, institutional takeovers, and the systematic targeting of schools associated with the Gülen movement across the world. In our report, “Turkish Maarif Foundation and the Global Attack on Gülen Schools,” Solidarity with OTHERS documents the Foundation’s central role in Türkiye’s campaign of transnational repression against Gülen-affiliated educational institutions. Our findings reveal the scale of this campaign: 🔴 At least 162 schools were closed, confiscated, or transferred across 29 countries. 🔴 131 of these institutions were taken over by the Turkish Maarif Foundation. 🔴 Approximately 7,800 teachers and other personnel were affected. Our research documents how #diplomatic #pressure, bilateral negotiations, administrative decisions, and, in some cases, #coercive #security #interventions were used to secure school closures and transfers. In several countries, these processes proceeded without adequate judicial safeguards, transparent procedures, or effective legal remedies. The Foundation cannot be assessed merely as an independent educational charity. Its governance, substantial public funding, and close institutional integration with the Turkish state raise fundamental questions about its role in implementing political objectives abroad. Most seriously, our report concludes that there is a reasonable basis to consider whether the documented acts, viewed cumulatively, may constitute the crime against humanity of persecution under Article 7(1) of the Rome Statute. ❌The 10th anniversary should therefore be an occasion for scrutiny and accountability, not simply celebration. We invite journalists, policymakers, human rights organisations, and international institutions to examine the evidence presented in our report. 📖 Read the full report👇 solidaritywithothers.com/tur…
