PetroSA’s rehabilitation shortfall could cost taxpayers at least R7 billion. Decades of regulatory failure have brought us here, and once again, the public is left to foot the bill. When it comes to accountability, taxpayers are always the ones left to pay.

Do this season's English Premier League soccer matches even matter any more? 👀
In something a little different from our usual beat (but is it really?), read Ariella Scher's oped on what's happening with the Manchester City "financial doping" findings, why they matter even if you don't watch soccer, and where to from here?

Open Secrets applauds this decision. It affirms the importance of international law and its promise of holding human rights abusers to account. This is under sustained attack across the planet. As the Nobel Committee said, “This year’s laureate has been instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.”

We are proud that Navi Pillay was a panellist at the first People’s Tribunal on Economic Crime in the arms trade. This was convened by Open Secrets and civil society partners in 2018 and called for accountability for arms corporations and politicians in the wake of Apartheid and State Capture.

My piece in the FM today. Chivayo might be dead, but it’s still urgent for South African authorities to investigate his alleged crimes and the extensive assets he accumulated here.

Following the death of Zimbabwean tycoon Wicknell Chivayo, South Africa must pursue its criminal probe into his R5bn assets and show the Financial Action Task Force it is serious about money laundering.

October 7 marks the third year of the onslaught of violence against the Palestinians, an extension of a decades-long genocide.
The genocidal acts and illegal occupation by Israel have not ceased, and the silencing of outrage has grown.
Let us not mindlessly and silently watch the killing of thousands of people and the destruction of culture, language and land.
Continue to boycott, protest and demand accountability from South African corporations and institutions that support ethnic cleansing.
Open Secrets has written about South Africa’s own arms trade and how weapons could be used in the genocide. Read more here: opensecrets.org.za/not-exact…

On 01 October - six of the Dirty Dozen Special Forces members accused of killing top cop Frans Mathipa were a no show in court. Their bail has been revoked and they are said to have spent most of the year in a military hospital. This might well be a ploy to ensure that the police cannot arrest these soldiers.
Open Secrets continues to demand justice given the high level of protection the murder accused have received from military top brass.

Yesterday, Zimbabwean business tycoon Wicknell Chivayo, his wife, and four others died in a helicopter crash east of Harare: sabcnews.com/sabcnews/zimbab…
While Zimbabwean authorities will likely undertake a full investigation into the crash, it is vital that South African authorities undertake a thorough investigation into the allegations of corruption.
Chivayo had billions in assets in Zimbabwe and South Africa. This year, as part of divorce proceedings in Zimbabwe, the court seized some of Chivayo’s assets. He claimed that it had seized up to R5 billion. Many of these assets may be the proceeds of crime, and the South African authorities should determine this before any of these assets are distributed: heraldonline.co.zw/high-cour…
