The August ClickPy report is out: overall downloads cooled over summer time, PyPI recorded 176.6B downloads in August 2026, down 4.5% from July.
But MCP and AI-agent tooling are still accelerating. 🤖
Notable packages this month:
🔌 mcp-types: 11.7M → 61.3M (+425%), MCP tooling just became a 60M-download dependency
☁️ google-cloud-parametermanager: 862K → 4.82M (+459%), @googlecloud, a 5.6x jump for Google Cloud’s Parameter Manager client
🎨 skia-python: 167K → 4.02M (+2,312%), Python bindings for Google’s graphics engine suddenly went 24x
🤝 openhands: 1.11M → 2.52M (+128%), @OpenHandsDev, the autonomous coding agent has now doubled for four straight months
📈 metricflow: 4.31M → 8.11M (+88%), @dbt_labs, semantic-layer adoption keeps compounding

I like how simple the @OpenHandsDev memory approach is for their software factory.
Agents just write to a project-level MEMORY.md file.
This is powerful in three ways:
1. It allows agent workers to leave behind state and be ephemeral.
2. It creates a basic shared-learning mechanism. If one agent learns something useful, every future agent can benefit.
3. Each agent is expected to be a good steward for the greater good, in this case the project, and not just think about its own task.

Better models do not eliminate the need for good agent design.
At ODSC AI West 2026, @rajistics, Agentic AI Engineer at @OpenHandsDev, will lead the training “The Design of Coding Agents: A Hands-On Workshop on Harness Engineering.”
Rajiv will break down four core harness levers that shape coding-agent performance: retrieval, memory, loops, and architecture. Attendees will test these ideas live using the open-source OpenHands harness and see how different design choices affect agent behavior.
With experience across OpenHands, Contextual AI, Hugging Face, Snorkel, Snowflake, and DataRobot, Rajiv brings a practical view of what it takes to build coding agents that work beyond a demo.

There are SO MANY great models that you can run in coding agents for free or virtually for free now.
- Ox Alpha, @Zai_org's new GLM Flash model, free for a little longer: openrouter.ai/stealth/ox-alp…
- Inkling by @thinkymachines is free on OpenRouter: openrouter.ai/thinkingmachin…
- Qwen-3.8-27B can be run on any decent sized hardware at home: huggingface.co/Qwen/Qwen3.8-…
- deepseek-v4-flash by @deepseek_ai is a great model that is very cheap, we provide it free on the OpenHands Cloud: app.all-hands.dev/canvas
If you're not trying these you should be!

A developer prompting their way through a Jira ticket gets about 20 to 30% faster, says @rbren_dev. So that's why he says the real gains sit somewhere else.
On the new episode of First Commit, Laura Hamilton sits down with the co-founder and CEO of @OpenHandsDev, the open source project that became one of the most starred AI coding agent repos on GitHub.

I love how agents make it possible to just automate little random things in your life. Right now I have agents:
1. watching my training runs and fixing them when they break
2. preemptively fixing broken CI and merge conflicts
3. preparing a daily work plan for me at 6AM

@OpenHandsDev, @ollama, and @friendliai take on whether open models — Kimi, GLM, MiniMax — have closed the gap enough to run production coding agents. One moderated panel, 30 minutes of open Q&A, and networking over food and drinks.
If you own the budget, the headcount, or the vendor strategy, this conversation is for you.

One thing I've done a lot recently is have agents organize my daily work, especially my todo list and communication channels (e.g. slack/email).
I find it super-useful when there's a bunch of stuff to keep track of, so I created a video here: youtu.be/S_wap45Iq8U

my opus 5 bill went from $200/month to $20 after moving one workflow to OpenHands - and now i finally understand why everyone is building agents instead of foundation models
everyone is waiting for gpt 5.6, claude opus and the next benchmark. meanwhile OpenHands quietly turned those same models into something that actually finishes the work instead of just answering questions
same opus 5. same gpt 5.6. different agent. suddenly one prompt becomes an hour-long workflow that writes code, debugs it, runs commands and keeps going until it's done
frontier models are becoming interchangeable. if Anthropic ships the best model next month, great. if OpenAI wins the month after, also great. the agent gets better either way
the companies fighting to own the model are making headlines. the companies building the layer above the model are quietly building products that survive every new release
i stopped paying for dozens of long opus 5 sessions because the agent now does most of the work before i ever need another expensive prompt
bookmark this before gpt 5.6 vs opus becomes the next internet war. the biggest opportunity quietly moved one layer above the model.

compete SENPAI re-write from cc to @OpenHandsDev's SDK here
github.com/wandb/senpai/pull…
Our SENPAI agent is currently no.1 on the @poolsideai x @eigenlabs inference optimization comp (for now) and first to break 200 TPS decode
Lovely first validation after a complete re-write of the agent to use @OpenHandsDev instead of cc
