Most pregnant question asked at the “50th Anniversary of the Asian Expulsion” public lecture 19/8/22 by .@mm1124: Since [historically all] humans are migrants, at what point do they become natives/[indigenous]? It wasn’t answered. The answer is scary.

10/10 The challenge for Ugandans is to delink our notion of citizenship from race and biology and ground it in politics and history. The challenge is to decolonize our notion of citizenship. #AsianExpulsionUgat50

8/10 The Asian leaders were an economic elite, not a political elite. They never aspired to power. Their political instinct was never to usurp power but to nestle close to those in power, to look up to them for a road map. They aimed to control the market, not the state.

7/10 There was one common loss among those who left Uganda - the loss of home. A sense of belonging develops over generations. The generation that was expelled lived as ‘strangers’, wherever they landed, as if always ready to pack their bags and leave at short notice.

6/10 About 10000 Asian residents became stateless . They were without a right to work in the country. At first, they lived in places of worship. With an increase of numbers, they crowded into one room tenements. Some celebrated the expulsion coz it opened for them British doors.

5/10 Asians were not good at reflecting their experiences critically. It is the children of refugees – second generation – who attempted to address this deficit. But theirs are handme-down stories, gradually homogenized into victim narratives. #AsianExpulsionUgat50

4/10 During the Asian expulsion, the British cabinet came up with a new language to make this same racialized distinction: ‘belongers’ vs United Kingdom Passport Holders. The Ugandan situation & that in UK disadvantaged those expelled from Uganda #AsianExpulsionUgat50

3/10 The clause on ‘citizenship’ in the independence constitution of 🇺🇬 distinguished ‘indigenous’ from ‘non-indigenous’ residents. Indigeneity meant having at least one grandparent born in 🇺🇬 This ruled out 90% of Asian residents of Uganda from a birth right to citizenship.
