A large prospective analysis from the UK Biobank found that higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids were associated with a statistically significant lower risk of early-onset dementia (diagnosed before 65). @OmegaQuant ➡️ Read more: nutritionaloutlook.com/view/…

Sardines are not a high mercury food. You’d need to eat *77* servings of sardines to get the mercury in one serving of swordfish. Second, the forms of selenium in some fish are thought to at least partially offset some of the presumed harms of mercury in fish, making the natural selenium/mercury a potentially relevant metric. Eg Mahi Mahi has as high ratio ~13:1, if I recall. Third, for those still concerned, broken-cell wall chlorella when consumed with fish can act as an efficient chelating agent. TL;DR - Chillax yo 😆. My mercury is fine. But thanks for your concern. And I’ve added this table to the letter, which is surprisingly popular on Day 1… the video is going to be even more fun open.substack.com/pub/staycu…
I just completed a month-long sardine diet. 1/5)The results were... surprising 😳 👉Body fat (7%) 👉Omega-3 levels, off the chart (literally, 25% higher than the visual scale goes and 2.7% above reference range) 👉Energy = Excellent (after some tweaks) 👉Cold Resistant. Maybe an impact of omega-3 on thermogenesis (via omega-3 derivatives, e.g. 12-HEPE)

Seed oil controversy is overblown. @RobertKennedyJr’s stance misrepresents data and reflects a poor grasp of nutrition. The real issue is excess calories from all CRRAHP (calorie rich, refined and highly processed) food concoctions, rooted in subsidized/cheap commodity crops, including but not whatsoever limited to seed, soybean, or corn oils. Replacing seed oils with saturated fats like tallow and butter would be worse. For more, see my interview with dietary fat expert, Prof. Bill Harris of @OmegaQuant youtu.be/vKIgptaD6N0?si=qOAZ…

There’s also been a rise in life expectancy with increase in seed oil consumption. Correlation is not causation (those seed oils have contributed to a 14% reduction in saturated fat intake since 1970, which may mean that seed oils actually somewhat contributed to our increase in life expectancy). Look at the best data and IMO the real issue that seed oils are associated with a massive increase in calorie intake over the decades (eg 1970 to 2000’s), driving obesity by quantitative calorie intake, and the association of Corporate Food Inc. (mis)using mass loads of them in CRRAHP (calorie rich, refined and highly processed) food concoctions. But CRRAHP would be even riskier if we continued to use saturated fat rich fat sources in CRRAHP foods. Two good reviews of the data that should be food for thought: @NutritionMadeS3: youtu.be/yqN61Z-qp88?si=yWn-… and @OmegaQuant: youtu.be/vKIgptaD6N0?si=9cnh…

All due respect, @RobertKennedyJr. We would be spend our national bandwidth on health far better if we focused on the sea of CRRAHP (calorie rich, refined and highly processed) foods and their sodium in which we are swimming than prioritizing artificial colors. There’s a prioritization list. And if anybody thinks that Froot Loops without artificial colors is going to make some dramatic health difference in anything, I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale. I’ll save my thoughts for your misunderstanding on dietary fats for another post as I have to see actual metabolic health patients at the Cleveland Clinic shortly. In the meantime, if you want a serious conversation on seed oils and dietary fats, please indulge in my interview with world renowned dietary fats expert and Professor Bill Harris @OmegaQuant youtu.be/vKIgptaD6N0?si=EwO4…

But in this blog, @MohammedAlo quotes "class 3" evidence to dismiss n3FA (an essential fatty acid which the body in most cannot make and thus must be eaten, usually supplemented). Very few can eat enough oil fish to maintain safe n3FA plasma levels. Not sure why anyone negatively quotes Class 3 evidence, as that basically covers the vast majority of things docs (including him) do every day in practice. Especially those using Medicine 3.0 approach. I challenge all to check their omega-3 Index @OmegaQuant

🌟 Are you getting enough Omega-3s? New research says probably not! 🐟💊 Most aren't reaching the cardioprotective level of 8% on the Omega-3 Index. Boost your Omega-3: 1. Eat 3 fish meals/week 🍣 2. Take EPA/DHA supplements 💊 3. Combine both! #Omega3 #HeartHealth @OmegaQuant

Just had to share this incredible photo that my friend Dr Bill Harris just shared with me- it was taken in the Lake District of Ambleside England. Of course, Bill has long been known in the Lipid Community as the original "Codfather" - @n3doc has long been studying and teaching all of us about fatty acids, especially those n3FAs. He & Clemens von Schacky were the developers of the famed Omega-3 Index, still the most informative assay that reflects tissue n3FA content. @nationallipid @society_eas @OmegaQuant

Omega-3-index by @OmegaQuant measures the proportion of RBC-phospholipids that are long-chain or LC-n3FA. That metric is the closest blood test that approximates tissue n3FA contet. Other labs use the term Omega-3-index erroneously. The link of the review article is (open access) ω-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Status Testing in Humans: A Narrative Review of Commercially Available Options - PubMed (nih.gov)
