It is depressingly apparent that to find reasonable commentators on global affairs today, you need to look outside of Europe. Below, former Singaporean Ambassador to the UN, Kishore Mahbubani, dispels the propagandistic narrative that @MishalHusain can't help but defend.

Watch this, highly recommend, and remember - Boris Johnson Ben Wallace Keir Starmer etc disgracefully went along with prosecuting SAS and refused to change the ECHR/HRA law to stop the madness. Right now special forces in Hereford and Poole cannot be told the legal basis for their ongoing operations. No authority can clarify because the ECHR madness is unconstrained and depends on whatever lawyers and judges decide. Many are being persecuted right now for doing missions they were ordered to do and were given medals for. The senior military have been pathetic in hiding year after year. The shameful saga says a lot about why yookay is a laughing stock. What sort of country behaves like this towards heroes like this? One that’s lost and its elites are rotten to the core…
This is the OFFICIAL preview of my upcoming interview with Christian Craighead, where he returns to tell the full story of what happened on January 15, 2019, at the Dusit D2 complex in Nairobi. The last time Christian was here, he made me a promise. If he ever told the full story of the attack in Nairobi, he would tell it here. He kept that promise. For the first time, Christian sits down to give his full account of the attack, the decisions he made inside that hotel, and the people he fought to save. @one_man_in

Yep. Except: 1. This was about important internal tools. The team was stuck in some architecture nightmare of their own doing (writing it in rails but headless, with graphql api, and a SPA react app, constantly needing frontend engineers for changes). I call this kind of thing 'cosplaying an enterprise production app'. All that complexity was in the way and using straight rails was perfect in that case. 2. I make calls like this all the time. Usually someone on the team asks me to. They see what needs to happen but don’t want to be the bad guy. I’m happy to just make the call if I agree with the premise. Saves enormous amounts of meetings and change management etc. Sometimes this is jokingly referred to as Founder-mode-as-a-service here. 3. For ten years I’ve also run an internal podcast called Context, where I revisit decisions like these and explain the reasoning so everyone can learn from them. This is helpful to give people all the variables that were considered and why this was the choice made given the information available at the time. I want to teach how to make such decisions effectively without needing me. Sunk cost fallacy is a problem. 4. Any notions that Shopify is succcessful despite of me doing this, instead of because of it, will have a hard time making their argument come together I think 😄 the part of 'two weeks later tobi learns about...' is nonsese and the pivot of that project up there happens one of the more successful examples of interventions. But getting the company to work effectively with great architecture and low technical debt baggage into the right direction is literally the job, so guilty as charged I suppose. But there are always cope stories floating around like this because they are more fun, than saying 'somehow we needed tobi to stop doing silly architecture astronautics'. I can totally see that.

Throwing rubbish in a landfill is (usually) better for the environment than recycling it. With few exceptions, recycling ends up emitting more CO2 and costing more money, while landfills are cheap and secure. - Recycling mid-tier plastics (like plastic bottles or butter tubs) costs thousands of dollars per ton of CO2 saved. It's cheaper to do direct air CO2 capture than that! And there is no shortage of plastic, nor any problem with sequestering it in the ground once we're done with it. - Modern landfills are extraordinarily secure and are *much* more than just big piles of trash. They capture 75%–95% of methane gas. Groundwater contamination is doesn't really happen with landfills built since 1990. A study of 31 landfills built since 1988 in NY found no adverse effect at all on local groundwater quality. - The crusade against single-use plastics has driven us to products that use far more materials and energy and would need to be used an absurd number of times to actually be an improvement. A steel straw needs to be used 150 times to be worth using. A ceramic mug needs to be used 1,000 times to beat a polystyrene cup. A cotton bag needs to be reused 173 times to beat single-use. - Some things ARE worth recycling. Recycling metal saves a huge amount of energy and material – recycling aluminium saves 95% of the energy spent on making fresh stuff. So we do a lot of it already: about 30% of steel worldwide is recycled. Modern, well-run landfills cause minimal environmental damage. We have plenty of space for them – less than 0.01% of the US is used for landfill and only about 0.02% of Germany. We can even build on top of old landfills, so the land area is not spent permanently. New in @WorksInProgMag, @robertwiblin and @chalmermagne on why it's usually best to just bury your trash. worksinprogress.co/issue/jus…

"It’s underestimated how much of a difference aggression and ambition makes. I think 95% of a company's success is that.” @torstenreil on not letting anything stop you: “Everything else is excuses.” “Regulation doesn't matter. Yeah sure it takes longer to start a company in Germany. Yes you have to go to a notary. Who cares?” “It's not a problem.” “The regulations that we are subject to as a defense company with regards to the certification qualification of our systems, export law, and a whole bunch of other things… dealing with confidentiality, classified information, is a hundred times more than what a startup has to deal with in terms of bureaucracy and you can still deal with it.” “It still doesn't slow us down.” “Who gives a shit? Stop making excuses.” “I just don't like when people make excuses.” “You just have to have a few very aggressive companies that point out that everyone else is basically mailing it in, and I think a lot of people are."
Torsten Reil (@torstenreil) is the founder of Helsing, Europe’s most valuable defense-tech startup. Previously, he was a computational biologist who taught neural networks to make virtual creatures walk, turned that into a gaming company he sold for $527 million, and then, at the moment defense was the least fashionable thing a European technologist could touch, founded the Al company that would help Europe defend itself. In March 2021, with no product and a pitch deck that predicted a Russian invasion of Ukraine, he and two co-founders raised $8.5 million. Four months later, Daniel Ek invested $100 million of his own money. Eleven months after the deck, Russia invaded Ukraine. Five years later, Helsing is Europe's most valuable defense-tech startup. Helsing is building thousands of strike drones, teaching Al to fly fighter jets, and seeding the deep sea with autonomous gliders capable of subsurface surveillance. Reminder that every country in Europe that publishes the violent crime rates by nationality finds those from Middle East and North Africa are around 2-4x that of native citizens. Crime rate should be lower not higher

such a goated tweet. do you have this much conviction in your work to carry on if you're unsuccessful and unprofitable after 6 years?
SpaceX had achieved nothing of note after 3 years and was written off as dead after 6 years with 3 consecutive launch failures. But you may have noticed that things are different now.

50% reduction in prostitution in Navan county Meath in seven days! "just" six trafficked & pimped women and children offered for prostituted sex in county Meath this morning, down from 11, seven days ago. All on an illegal website controlled by an Irish family of jailbird pimps and their associates. It's been quite the week! The day after the Tweet below, one of the child-like females offered for prostituted sex was replaced by a female who was obviously much older. The four brothels are now down to three. With "just" six advertisements, we need to be careful on claims but it looks like one Chinese trafficking gang with women and girls they claim are Korean, Japanese & Taiwanese is the main remaining presence. Navan has seen around €15,000 flow into the pockets of criminal gangs in the past week. But instead of coining in €2200 a week from their illegal advertising, the McCormicks are just getting €1200 for the six people advertised today on their website (which could be closed down by tea-time by Gardai/Dept of Justice writing to the Tech Ireland group at IBEC like they did with Russia Today) Navan remains the county brothel town for Meath with 100% of the advertised prostitution in the county. Local TD and Aontú leader Peadar Toibin remains silent on the matter. The 10 gardai in the town remain uninterested and fail to record a single offence. And the Meath Chronicle local paper based in Navan would prefer not to touch the subject. How are we getting on with the brothels walking tour?
12 noon on Tuesday 21 July 2026 and every single one of the 11 trafficked & pimped women and children being offered for prostituted sex in county Meath on an illegal website, operated by a family of jailbird pimps and their associates, are all based on Aontú leader Peadar Toibin doorstep in Navan. Chinese & Brazilian trafficked women (and child-like females) by the looks of it. Uniquely, Peadar has raised the case of the 14-year old girl found in a brothel in Limerick, five separate times in the Dail, indicating an unusual (and creditable) degree of concern. Will that concern extend to his own doorstep? To be clear, Deputy Toibin is in no way connected to this activity whatsoever.
