God has a tremendous love for mankind, as evidenced by the boundless salvation that He has granted us through His Son. He wants to make us heirs of all things in Him. Rev. 21:7. So, when people reject such a great salvation for the momentary pleasures of sin, it should not surprise us that God is aroused to zeal against such blatant, unbridled ungodliness.

But, dearly beloved, whoever you are who sincerely wish to give yourselves up to God, I beg you... you, that after having once made the donation, you take not yourselves back again; remember, a gift once presented, is no longer at the disposal of the giver.

Soon as we cease, from inability, to practice mortifications of our own fashioning, those of God take their place—the crosses which God gives according to our degree. These are not chosen by the soul; but the soul, under the interior guidance of God, receives such as He appoints

There is no wisdom apart from the cross. The cross is able to stop the corruption that comes from lust. When the flesh with its lusts is crucified, the Spirit of wisdom gets the quietness needed to reveal Himself to people.
What people generally regard as wisdom is nothing more than external, intellectual Bible knowledge. In spite of all this knowledge, a person’s heart can remain just hard and unyielding, and quite often it causes them to become even more stony than ever.

No one can be sanctified without diligently taking heed to themselves. By examining myself in the light of the Spirit, I gain knowledge about myself and about God. If we have received a thorough knowledge about ourselves beforehand, then later in life it will be easier to keep ourselves pure and irreproachable in God’s sight. Paul studied himself as a person, and in Romans 7 he has given us an excellent representation of himself in relationship to God’s laws. That is why this chapter is the very foundation of the doctrine of sanctification.
