New Mexico’s long-term drought and record-low 2026 snowpack have brought Elephant Butte Reservoir on the Rio Grande to levels not seen since the early 1970s. The reservoir is now at about 1.3% of capacity at the conclusion of summer releases. Elephant Butte Dam is designed to operate at low reservoir levels and ongoing monitoring shows there are no safety concerns.
The Bureau of Reclamation remains committed to working with partners to ensure public safety, support local communities, and balance the needs of diverse stakeholders to apportion a limited supply of water from the Rio Grande and its tributaries.

New Mexico just earned the only "A" grade in the nation for making it easier to connect rooftop solar and home batteries to the power grid — and we're the only state to do so.
A new national report scored all 50 states on how smoothly homeowners and businesses can plug clean energy into the grid. Most states scored a C or worse. New Mexico stood alone at the top, recognized for clear rules, transparency, and strong standards for solar and battery storage.
More clean energy on the grid means more reliability, more options, and a stronger energy future for New Mexicans. 🌞⚡

The Strategic Water Supply will support clean energy and advanced manufacturing initiatives without putting our freshwater supplies at risk. I look forward to working with the legislature to advance the bill and secure necessary funding.
