New Mexico’s long-term drought and record-low 2026 snowpack have brought Elephant Butte Reservoir on the Rio Grande to levels not seen since the early 1970s. The reservoir is now at about 1.3% of capacity at the conclusion of summer releases. Elephant Butte Dam is designed to operate at low reservoir levels and ongoing monitoring shows there are no safety concerns. The Bureau of Reclamation remains committed to working with partners to ensure public safety, support local communities, and balance the needs of diverse stakeholders to apportion a limited supply of water from the Rio Grande and its tributaries. 📹: Sunrise over Elephant Butte Dam and Reservoir on the Rio Grande in New Mexico, July 10, 2026.
