Yesterday at #CND67, the UK strongly supported inclusion of #HarmReduction in the UN resolution on preventing overdose deaths. When will it show similar commitment at home?

Opposition to harm reduction is often framed as opposition to 'enabling' - but I struggle to see this logic as anything other than wanting to use pain and death as a form of deterrence, and 'sending the right message'.
Its sado-moralism

Terrible statistic - 1 in 2 of lives lost to execution in 2023 due to drug control. There is ever more evidence that drug control is not compatible with human rights and should not be promoted by a division of the United Nations. – at South West, England
1 of every 2 people who lost their life by execution in 2023 lost their lives in the name of drug control.

The biggest evidence review on OPCs @GWShorter and absolutely no evidence to say OPCs would ‘encourage drug use’
Looking forward to your book Alex and more on #moralsidestep
The @ukhomeoffice line on overdose prevention centres is that they would 'encourage drug use'. This is not based on evidence, but on a moral objection to (some) drug use. #moralsidestep

DCRs don't encourage drug use - they make current drug use safer. We need them across the UK.

A new study led by our researchers has examined the evidence, in what is believed to be the largest review of Overdose Prevention Centres worldwide.
“There are so many misconceptions about OPCs – how they can help and what the evidence says. These are harm-reduction spaces which aim to meet people where they are at, provide health support and basic facilities, and keep people alive.
"They are places of safety and inclusion, often for those who do not have other places to go. The evidence shows when we create community for people who are often excluded from society, that is when the magic happens, people are empowered to improve their health and wellbeing." Drug consumption rooms could save 1000s of UK lives, study finds,👇
Facilities could also slash disease transmission & cut pressure on ambulance callouts & hospitals

I'm about as sceptical of mass media campaigns that promote safer drug use as I am of those that promote abstinence. But this article misunderstands the concept of stigma, which is something that is attached to people, not behaviours. 1/3
Destigmatizing addiction and its treatment is a good idea, but trying to destigmatize drug use is a profound mistake, as Jon Caulkins and I explain in @TheAtlantic

.@MegJ4289 spoke with @AndrewMarr9 on @LBC abt rise in synthetic drugs across UK
Very concerning for 🏴 with some of the highest drug deaths in the world already
Suspected deaths for Jan-Sep 2023 indicate 13% rise from Jan-Sep 2022
@PaulJSweeney @agcolehamilton Glasgow & Edinburgh are some of the worst impacted with suspected deaths in Glasgow at 231 and Edinburgh at 99, Lanarkshire was also badly impacted with 108 suspected deaths in the area.
While those of us that have campaigned for overdose prevention sites welcome the opening of one in Glasgow we all know that this alone is not enough and we need these facilities in others areas but also crucially we need access to initiatives that are proven to save and improve lives like diamorphine assisted treatment and drug checking services.
Although the Scottish Lord Advocate has supported diversion from prosecution Scotland had over 22,000 arrests for drug offences in 2022, it is fine to say publicly Scotland is treating drug dependency as a health issue, however this is not playing out in reality.
Without swift action from Scottish Government around these points as our Cranstoun Director Meg Jones said "we could be sleeping walking into what is quite a significant public health crisis" this is even more so the case in Scotland with our already out of control drug death crisis without these drugs that are now appearing in the illicit drug supply.
Cranstoun will release a full statement soon on the latest shocking numbers of people dying in Scotland outlining yet again as we have done consistently over the last 3 years exactly what the Scottish Government can do and what is in their power to do to start seeing these terrible and preventable death rates reduce.
Our thoughts as always go out to all the family, friends and loved ones of those who have lost a loved one.
