It cannot be understood…
It cannot be brought under the aegis of rational apprehension…
Reality outran apprehension…
You do not measure the depth of a universal mystery with the neural network of a primate…

My answer is that DMT states of consciousness show clear computatipnal properties that are extraordinary.
In this video I cover how on DMT you may encounter entities that can color hyperbolic surfaces in extremely precise and quick ways, allow for topological transformations with non-trivial properties like turning sequences of experienced into tubes and then comparing them side by side, and identify topological extrema of shapes you have never seen before at sub-second speeds.
Essentially, on DMT you see really sophisticated examples of exotic qualia computing, which causes an immense impression of intelligence, agency, and information processing mastery.

Question for DMT People (and anyone else with insight/knowledge/training/etc):
After ingesting DMT, a recurring theme/impression is not merely the presence of "living entities", but of a profound unshakeable sense of their immense intelligence.
So, my question is: Based on your personal experience (or perhaps just your own insight/ideas), how is this impression of intelligence acquired?
Is it merely their technological/advanced appearance/environment/behaviour?
Is it the complexity of the beings or their environment?
Something else? Is it ineffable but somehow knowable?
So, in short, what gives you the impression that you're encountering beings that are not only living, but far more intelligent than us?
(P.S. I don't think this is a trivial question at all. Recognising intelligence in earthly creatures isn't trivial -- in discarnate entities even less so -- but I'd like ideas)
RT/tags/etc appreciated if you know someone who might have a good idea on this.

"DMT is the missing neurotransmitter, found at similar concentrations to dopamine and serotonin."
"Overloading the brain with DMT well beyond its natural levels and functions creates an alien environment in the brain."
"We know of no other compound that can be administered and produce such otherworldly phenomena."
"It's the only neurotransmitter we know of that can do that."
Steven Barker has been studying DMT for over 50 years and he's back on GS for a scintillating round 2.

Andrew Gallimore "The DMT world is full of beings that you can interact with....These are non human beings they are entirely ALIEN" 👽
“Infinitely more complex and dynamical and strange geometries and topologies… filled with beings with whom you could interact and communicate. Beings that were not human, they were not animal… entirely other, entirely alien.”
Neurobiologist Andrew Gallimore recounts how reading Terence McKenna as a teenager introduced him to DMT and set the course of his entire scientific career. McKenna described an alternate reality of crystalline clarity, populated by autonomous intelligences that feel more real than ordinary waking life. These entities are not archetypes or hallucinations in the usual sense. They appear agentic, communicative, and fundamentally non human.
Gallimore later experienced the state himself and has spent decades studying how a simple plant molecule can switch the brain into constructing these hyper-coherent alien worlds. The consistency of reports across independent users remains one of the deepest unsolved questions in consciousness research.

Endogenous DMT is produced in the mammalian cortex at nearly identical levels to serotonin and dopamine.
If serotonin is important, endo DMT is as well!

Mind-altering drugs played a key role in the rise of Andean civilization, notably huachuma, coca, 5-MeO, and DMT.
No surprises here. Fascinating what modern technology can uncover.
We've used them forever & will keep finding them useful.

Rigorously designed trials are how psychedelic medicine earns legitimacy. This wave of work is already underway: @dmt_quest put up $500K in funding via @ResearchHub with an RFP on expanded consciousness & endogenous DMT.
Studies funded so far span psilocybin neuroprotection in stroke, endogenous DMT brain biotypes, and breathwork-induced altered states.

We take it for granted, but anesthesia is one of the best things that has ever happened to humanity. It turns major surgery from a torture-chamber-level horror into a worrying, but relatively painless, endeavor.
Nitrous oxide was used recreationally decades before it became medicine. Around 1800, Humphry Davy held nitrous sessions with doctors, chemists, and poets. They noticed the tingling, the euphoria, and pain disappearing. Davy even explicitly proposed using it in surgery.
In 1818, Michael Faraday reported that ether produced similar sleep and analgesia.
In 1824, Henry Hill Hickman rendered animals unconscious, operated on them without apparent pain, and proposed doing the same for human surgery. The Lancet dismissed it as “surgical humbug.”
And still nothing happening. Where is the urgency?
It took Horace Wells attending a public laughing-gas exhibition in 1844, where he saw a man badly injure his leg without feeling it. The next morning, Wells had his own tooth extracted under nitrous.
According to my calculations, preventing cluster headaches would reduce an equal or greater amount of total suffering than anesthesia does. (This is not mere speculation - I've ran countless MCMC methods on available data under a range of assumptions; @alfredoparrah actually developed software for this).
And DMT aborts cluster-headache attacks at sub-hallucinogenic doses, often within thirty seconds, for a majority of sufferers who have tried it.
People use DMT recreationally and spiritually.
Even doctors.
Yet it's illegal and not recognized as the powerful painkiller it is for the worst pain and suffering a human can medically experience.

Context matters more the harder you trip… 👌
Our new paper in @Nature is now out.
Psychedelics don’t simply disorder the brain. Using fMRI, EEG and AI in 62 psychedelic-naive adults, we found hidden, context-sensitive organisation beneath the apparent chaos -- strongest in people reporting more positive, profound experiences and a reduced sense of separation from the world.
