this is a false dichotomy and we see it constantly in AI discourse "fear the tech" and "fear who controls the tech" are two different things going wrong the first is a "misaligned" model doing something nobody intended. the hugging face incident was an early example. the second is a model doing exactly what a small group of powerful insiders intended, at everyone else's cost naval's answer to the second is to disperse power, i.e. open weights. but that does nothing for the first, and actually makes it worse. 10K people running a misaligned model is far harder to contain than a handful of labs running it so the first problem needs its own answer. that's what pacing the frontier and putting outside evaluators inside the labs is for. and done transparently it helps with the second too, because no lab gets to operate unobserved which means centralize vs disperse is not "the only real decision". there's actually a much more relevant one: how fast, and how transparently, does the frontier get built? that's the decision actually on the table today and coordination isn't some impossible fantasy. @DarioAmodei, @sama, @elonmusk and @demishassabis all just backed the first step today. and yes coordination with china is a whole different beast, but it's not impossible. so we don't actually have to pick which of @naval's fears to solve, again, its a false dichotomy we can carefully navigate both: the technology, and the people who wield it
AI isn’t going away. Barring unprecedented global government coordination, it isn’t even slowing down. The only real decision is whether to centralize power, or disperse it. Do you fear the technology? Or a small number of people controlling the technology?

Out of respect for Elon Musk’s many awesome achievements in promoting technology and freedom, I’ll say the following as diplomatically as I can: His post below is, which implies that all concerns about AI extinction risk are nothing more than a ‘psyop’ that’s been ‘prepared for a long time’ is very puzzling, and is not consistent with Elon’s own past concerns about AI safety. Of all the ‘AI Doomers’ in the world, Elon has been the richest, the most powerful, and the most influential. Since 2014 he has been warning about possible extinction risks from Artificial Superintelligence, long before other tech billionaires were paying attention. It’s been a major theme in his life for over a decade, and he's expressed his concerns publicly hundreds of times. We have the receipts: 1) Aug 2, 2014: Elon tweeted ‘We need to be super careful with AI. Potentially more dangerous than nukes.’ Since then, he has posted hundreds of times on social media about AI extinction risks and the need for serious AI safety work. 2) Oct 2015: At MIT, Elon said AI is ‘our biggest existential threat’, and he explicitly compared training AI to ‘summoning the demon’. His warning was dramatic, emphatic, and alarming. 3) Dec 2015: Elon co-founded OpenAI in direct response to his fears about AI extinction risk; he was especially concerned that Google/Deepmind was developing AI recklessly, with insufficient safeguards. He structured OpenAI as a non-profit that was supposed to explicitly prioritize safety and humanity over development speed and profit. 4) 2023-2024: During the post-ChatGPT excitement, Elon posted many, many warnings on X about AI extinction risk, frequently saying his personal estimate of a catastrophic AI outcome (‘p(doom’’) was 10-20%. 4) Feb 2024: Elon sued OpenAI over AI safety concerns, arguing that it had betrayed its original safety mission, disbanded safety teams, rushed ahead for commercial gain, and prioritized profits over safety; his lawyers in court emphasized that advanced AI could trigger extinction. Only since 2024 has Elon started mocking concerns about AI safety, and only in the last few weeks has he called the worries about extinction risk a ‘setup’ and a ‘psyop’. So, has Elon legitimately changed his mind? Did he switch from thinking that advanced AI would be a serious extinction risk (as he repeatedly said, for ten years, from 2014 – 2024), to thinking that all such concerns are just a politically motivated psyop? If so, he should let everyone know why he changed his mind, based on what new evidence – especially since most AI safety experts and citizens have updated their beliefs in the opposite direction, towards more concern about extinction risk. Or does he feel that he was somehow taken in by an ancient ‘psyop’ that was running even before 2014, long before the current AI investment boom, that convinced him way back then that AI extinction risk is a serious concern? If so, he should explain why, as one of the smartest and most skeptical people in the world, he was taken in by such a ‘psyop’, and signal-boosted it so ardently and publicly, for so long. Or is he being disingenuous, deceptive, and/or hypocritical, hoping that people would forget he was the most prominent and influential ‘AI Doomer’ in the world for 10 years?
I think the groundwork for this psy op (for lack of a better term) has been prepared for a long time. This was just the match that lit the fire.

The last week has been pretty rough being on X, first with the awful, schizophrenic-racist murder of Iryna Zarutska, and now with the political assassination of Charlie Kirk, both captured in vivid visual detail such that every excruciating second of their life and consciousness being snuffed out can be experienced by anyone who watched the videos. Both constantly being shared and talked about endlessly on here, and rightfully so. These are important deaths highlighting how unhealthy our society has become. Health, and mental health in particular, is what is ailing all of us right now, whether we notice it or not. What’s worse is that even when we do notice, we are often powerless to change or do anything about it. For example, I was shaken so much yesterday that I told myself I would stay off of X for a while, at least a day I thought, but here I am, unable to look away from the car crash unfolding in our society. I’m a fairly average person, I have a job, loved ones, hobbies, I even meditate every day, yet I find myself entranced by the dialog, storylines, and breaking news happening here on X, much like the average person is. I realize how bad this is for me, and in turn, it must be for everyone else. I’m lucky enough not to be severely mentally ill, but not everyone has had that same luck. Some people have snapped, and done awful things like shooting up schools, murdering CEOs, attempting political assassinations, and now assassinating innocent commentators. Social media, and the Media in general, has been eroding the sanity of the population bit by bit. Social media’s blame is more insidious and stems from the dopamine hit we all get from refreshing the page and seeing more content, and getting our content out there, it’s a constant bombardment of information and we can’t get enough. This isn’t healthy, brains need time to cool down, defragment, process the information it has received, and come up with novel ideas. Our addiction to social media stifles all of this and more. The mainstream media’s part in our illness is less subtle, to say the least. They have been brainwashing people with orchestrated narratives for decades, and most people consume these narratives without question. With so much information overload, how is anyone supposed to come to their own conclusions on important topics? Just listen to what “the news” tells you, and trust that journalists have done their due diligence so you don’t have to. Unfortunately, most journalists are being cut from the same cloth, created in echo chambers, where independent thought, and healthy debate have become taboo. Stepping in line with your peers and their ideologies is the only choice, so much so that when prominent people buck from this trend, they are threatened with, and in Charlie’s case literally, murdered. So how do we all stop watching the car crash of our society unfold and prevent it from happening? Much like an actual car crash, unfortunately, I don’t think there’s an answer. Obviously, not any easy answers at least. Media isn’t going away, and mental illness is poorly understood. I think our only hope is if we take mental health more seriously. First and foremost we should take care of our own health by taking time off from the media, nurture your brain and stop flooding it with information, especially negative news. Secondly, as a society, and most importantly journalists and pundits, we need to tone down our hyperbolic, accusatory rhetoric, otherwise we will keep fanning the flames of political violence and division. Lastly, we need to objectively study the causes of mental illness and be willing to treat and perhaps institutionalize those who are most severely affected, short term for some, long term for others. I’m not a religious person, but I pray that we will find it in us to overcome the division that has been sowed for us, and by us.

Most of my recent posts got <200 views and I couldn't sell any pics in 2 months, so I'm attempting the impossible here... But "when something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor." (- Elon) I need to raise (at least) $1.2k to pay some really urgent & late bills and I have 2.5 weeks AT MOST. While I'd be insanely grateful for any donation on Paypal or Ko-fi (I put the links in my bio), I'd love to sell these pictures as well. If I could sell all 7 small ones & the big one, they'd cover the most urgent $1.2k ... 😞 I can also stitch Cybertrucks, Juniper Ys and the Tesla logo, but if you have a unique idea, please don't hesitate to reach out. Please consider helping, even with a repost, it'd help a lot while the algo is crushing me. 🙏

Love my Tesla and have mostly had good experiences with service, but Tesla insurance is making me question if it’s worth it lately. They apparently are not properly notifying the DMV of my insurance renewal and now my I have a flag on my registration and a $260 fine for lapse of insurance. Now I’ve been waiting for over 2 hrs to get on the phone with Tesla insurance…

FSD V13.2.2 is already perfect. What else is left?

I can’t believe how much better FSD V13 is compared to what I had with V12.5.6. So many of the little nagging issues seem to have been resolved. Assertive passing on highway, smooth breaking throughout including highway and stoplights. Flawless through heavy construction.

Maryland folks, I need another favor. There is a person from Anne Arundel county that has been infected with SARS-CoV-2 for about 3 years (Delta infection). They probably don’t even know they are infected, but they are shedding a ton of viral material in wastewater 1/

Replying to @wholemars @elonmusk
Since I got laid off in Feb, I've been giving people rides via Uber. Since I received FSD Beta V12.3, I've been using it for every singe ride. So many riders have been blown away, especially this whole generational family (grandparents with a daughter, and granddaughter) 🤯

I don’t normally post but I should mention I got the new highland today! Car exceeded all expectations. Coming from a 2020 model 3 it’s like night and day. Build quality, materials, suspension, noise, range, everything is way way better. Get one. It’s worth it!
