1/9 I am your new Santa Claus.
Well, I now have a sheepskin coat, an ushanka hat (a fur hat with ear-covering flaps), and soon I will get valenki (a traditional Russian winter footwear). I have grown a beard for the 20 days of my transportation.

Our afforestation project will not just deliver environmental impact; it will catalyze job creation and economic growth. At #SGIForum today, the efforts of the Kingdom's ambition to grow 10B trees were further unpacked.

Shocking. 2001-2022 an area 11X the size of the forests planted was lost to fire (average annual) Not only are we losing the battle for a safe future on Earth, we are cheating ourselves, allowing fossil-fuel offsetting against volatile green carbon sinks nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

Another journalist killed by Israeli fire in Gaza
It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the loss of our dedicated Al Jazeera cameraman Samer Abu Dakka during the recent coverage in Gaza in an Israeli airstrike. His unwavering commitment to truth and storytelling has left an indelible mark on our team. Samer, whose lens captured the raw and unfiltered reality of life in Gaza, was not just a skilled professional but a compassionate soul who understood the power of visual storytelling. His courage in the face of adversity allowed the world to witness the untold stories of a region grappling with complex challenges. In the pursuit of truth, our cameraman faced immense risks to bring viewers a deeper understanding of the human experience in Gaza. His lens became a window into the lives of those affected by conflict, shedding light on stories that needed to be told.

We are in uncharted territory. Earth’s vital signs have worsened. One example: the recorded sea surface temperatures this year have been completely off the chart, we scientists are not yet able to fully explain why. Important new climate report out now.

2023 has been a year of record #weatherextremes for now: The impacts of #globalwarming have been severe, finds new report with PIK Director @jrockstrom & @WilliamJRipple et al. Read more about the latest update of planetary vital signs: pik-potsdam.de/en/news/lates…

In those roles I’ve been heckled off stage by Palestinian students; complained about to UK Minister by an Israeli Ambassador; targeted by Palestinian militants; and an Israeli PM once threatened to have me fired. Every morning in Lebanon began with reports from tense borders. 4/7

This is an important day.
The reason is clear: the more we raise ambition on international climate finance, the closer we get to our climate goals and the more we reaffirm our humanity.
Thank you Germany for hosting the GCF-2 replenishment.

Science confirms Pope Francis despair in his new Apostolic Exhortation #LaudatoDeum that we live on a "suffering planet" and "may be nearing a breaking point". "This is a global social issue and one intimately related to the dignity of human life."

We are not making progress. Face existential challenges. And need a transformative action plan. Following another - politically flat - SDG summit & NY Climate Week, here is a @TIME 100 Voices OpEd on implications of the Latest Health Check of the Planet ti.me/3ZqH80k

We finally have a scientific health check for the entire planet! 6 of 9 planetary boundaries currently transgressed. This does not mean irreversible collapse, but we are losing resilience. We are putting the stability of the entire earth system at risk.
All #PlanetaryBoundaries mapped out, six of nine crossed: For the first time, a team of scientists is able to provide a full picture of planetary resilience. Pressure in all those boundary processes is increasing, newly published research shows: pik-potsdam.de/en/news/lates…
ALT Six of nine planetary boundaries are currently transgressed. The length of the wedges symbolizes what the current state of the corresponding process is, in relation to the distance from the planetary boundary (end of the green area) and the Holocene baseline (origin of the diagram). The color symbolizes the risks associated with each. For example, a wedge may be very long because the current state is already very far from the planetary boundary and the Holocene. But it may still not be purple, because that is not yet associated with very high risks in this particular case. In other cases already a "small" overshoot (short wedge) results in a big risk: Then the color further inside already changes to purple.

Finally out! 1st diagnosis of the entire Planet. All the 9 Planetary Boundaries quantified defining Our Safe Operating Space on Earth. Bad news: 6 of 9 PBs breached. Good news: Window still open, we know what to measure, we can return and we win if we do! science.org/doi/full/10.1126…
