Based. I spent a day reading thru the archive at the Newberry a few years ago. Many of the figures in the Dill Pickle Scene remind me of certain TPOT personalities. The scene had surprising ideological diversity, despite being associated with the Wobblies (IWW)

A wonderful rescue! I remember going to inspect the Burlington Archives in situ with John Aubrey ~1980 before they were moved. They were covered in dust and dirt, just a mess. High praise to the Newberry for cleaning, organizing and preserving them for posterity!

He's been gone for nearly 30 years but Mike Royko is back in a big way, in a handsome and lively Newberry Library exhibition and later this summer on the Chopin Theatre stage in a one man show that calls him the "toughest man in Chicago." chicagotribune.com/2024/06/1…

12/13 The idea that Parr met Askew in person is found in a 1603 work by the Jesuit R. Parsons. He claimed that Askew sought to “corrupt” women and “found means to enter with … Q. Katherine Parr." He gleefully asserted that H8 would have burned Parr “if he had lived.” Ha!

9/10 The "Paraphrases" is a HUGE book and every parish was required to get a copy. Parishes also bought desks (for readers to use) and chains to make sure that no one absconded with Parr's book! The book asserts that Parr was a much better reformer than Henry. Impressive.

5/13 Katherine’s second book, "Prayers or Meditations" (1545), was a reformist reworking of a popular mediaeval book, "The Imitation of Christ." Here is a copy @NewberryLibrary. Princess Elizabeth made a trilingual gift copy of Parr’s book for H8 as a New Year’s gift in 1546.
