Parts of the New Forest are seeing a resurgence of heathers following rain. Calluna vulgaris (ling) is plentiful in wetter areas. Erica cinerea (bell heather) & Erica tetralix (cross leaved heath) still to be found @wildflower_hour #WildflowerHour

#CommonNames (tho uncommon)=Commoners’ Lanterns. Flowers arrive when heath looks parched & faded, yet these brilliant blue trumpets suddenly appear among the heather in the drying bogs like little signal lamps.

New Forest streams under pressure. New forest Water Watchers found slightly elevated nitrates, temperature 22°C. Oxygen good in this stretch where water is flowing but in many streams it’s low as water is stagnating into pools. Livestock still able to find water.

We would like to remind everyone visiting the #NewForest that BBQs, campfires, stoves and outdoor cooking equipment are banned across the New Forest. Anyone found carrying out these banned activities may be fined and prosecuted.

The fact that even uncontaminated streams are seeing nitrate spikes tells you how systemic this is. Citizen science like this matters so much!

Nitrate levels are rising across many New Forest streams like this uncontaminated one, during extreme heat low rainfall & reduced flows Lower flows reduce dilution & warm dry soils can release more nitrogen as organic matter breaks down. New Forest Water Watch continue to monitor

I’m working with Year 6 kids for a couple of days over at Potters Gate Primary in Surrey. Their classes are all named after big cats, so that’s our project. 😁 Today was all building, tomorrow. . . colour.

Great excitement when we discovered a huge crop of our potatoes!
The children dug deep to find them, it was so much fun discovering them! We washed, sliced them and cooked wedges! From soil to table in an hour! @jhonwik26 @NewForestSussed @NurseryWorld #earlyyears #preschool

🌱 Compost with Care 🌿
Did you know that garden waste can accidentally spread invasive plants into the Open Forest?
When getting rid of grass cuttings, prunings or compost, please take care not to dump garden waste beyond the boundary of your home.
Invasive species can quickly establish in sensitive habitats, threatening native wildlife and reducing the grazing available for New Forest Commoners’ animals.
It's best to compost garden waste responsibly at home or use approved green waste disposal services, and never dump garden waste in the Forest or along its edges.
Thank you for helping protect the New Forest's special landscapes, wildlife and grazing habitats this #InvasiveSpeciesWeek!
