In January 2023, it took me a week to tell my wife that I had been fired from my former employer. She ended up finding the dismissal letter in the bag I used for vending leather products in the Harare CBD.

Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localized. The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it. The operation is already scheduled to take place in the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.

Four years ago, we conducted a land use planning exercise with a farmer based in Marondera.
At the time, he was travelling abroad and back was clear about one thing: he did not want complicated, high maintenance services. He wanted something simple, practical, and easy to maintain.
We suggested an orchard. We agreed on a phased strategic implementation plan:
1. Start with the orchard low maintenance fruit trees, especially mangoes.
2. Add a mushroom hub using fruit waste, peels, and crop residues as substrate.
3. Then add fruit drying turning surplus mangoes into dried fruit for longer shelf life and better prices.
Today, he is doing it on his own.
And here are the breakdown we used in his plan.
Cost Breakdown
Phase 1: Orchard Establishment (50 mango trees)
Item Cost (US$)
Mango seedlings (50 @ US$3) 150
Land preparation & planting 100
Manure / compost 100
Watering cans, hose, basic tools 80
Basic fencing 300
Labour 150
Total Phase 1 880
Phase 2: Mushroom Hub
Item Cost (US$)
Convert existing shed (ventilation, humidity) 150
Substrate materials (straw, crop residues) 50
Mushroom spawn (5 kg) 40
Polythene bags, trays, sterilisation tools 200
Basic humidity control 150
Training / extension support 50
Total Phase 2 640
Phase 3: Fruit Drying
Item Cost (US$)
Locally assembled solar dryer 1,800
Packaging materials (bags, labels, boxes) 150
Slicing & preparation tools 100
Training & food safety compliance 50
Total Phase 3 2,100
Overall Investment
Phase Cost (US$)
Phase 1: Orchard 880
Phase 2: Mushroom Hub 640
Phase 3: Fruit Drying 2,100
Contingency (10%) 362
Total 3,982
Orchard: 50 trees × 200 kg = 10,000 kg of mangoes.
· Fresh sales: 6,000 kg at US$0.50/kg = US$3,000
· Drying surplus: 4,000 kg fresh → 400 kg dried at US$16/kg = US$6,400.
· Mushroom hub: 450 kg per year at US$6/kg = US$2,700.
Total potential annual revenue: US$12,100
Less total investment: US$3,982
Potential net income: US$8,118

When it comes to farming people in the diaspora think they can start what a call these days "PROJECTS" & let their trusted family members run it for them. It always turns out bad dont for one second think you can run things from a distance without the right structures in place.
Employ fewer workers experienced ones. Manager & assistant. Ensure the manager is a lot older than the assistant. Pay them a good wage! Give them an incentive like performance bonus, free housing, school fees. Make them feel worth their effort. Its important you know ow how to manage your labour.
Hire consultants before you do anything. If you planing on doing arable pay for mapping & soil testing. If its livestock pay for advice so you understand the whole process & know what you getting into. Farming is a VERY serious business & tough. If you are going to do it go ALL-IN & give it your best shot.

You guys have been my day ones, this started as something for vibes, till I got some serious feedback to take this seriously and now I have developed a full site where some of the work is now automated. Kindly visit vadziyivemoto.com/.
I got bored and created a searchable database of everyone who received cars, cash, and gifts from Wicknell Chivayo.
The North remembers. This record will be useful one day.

I really hate coworkers who make work miserable for everyone. We’re all here trying not to starve to death. Do your job, I’ll do mine, we get paid and go home. No need for unnecessary drama.

Lets change the mindset 🚨 @Tatenda_Agro
Most Zimbabwean farmers think in seasons.
Plant in November. Harvest in April. Rest for 8 months.
The most profitable farmers think in cycles
Here is what a properly planned 1 hectare looks like across 12 months:
CYCLE 1 Tomatoes
(August–November)
Variety: Tengeru 97 (Open Pollinated)
Seed: 1 500
Yield: 30–50 tonnes
Net profit: 6 000–16 000
Dry season prices hold at 0.40/kg.
CYCLE 2 — Onions (February–June)
Variety: Dina F1 hybrid (Starke Ayres)
Seed: 1 700
Yield: 20–40 tonnes
Store until July–August when prices peak
Net profit: 3 000–11 000
CYCLE 3 — Butternut (June–September)
Variety: Butter Bush OP
Seed: 900
Yield: 15–25 tonnes
Shelf life 3–6 months — sell when prices recover
Net profit: 1 800–6 500
Same 1 hectare. Three cycles. Three income streams.
Combined annual net from 1 hectare: 10 800–33 500
That is 900–2 791 every single month from one hectare of properly cycled crops.
The farmer who plants once and rests earns once.
The farmer who cycles earns three times from the same piece of ground.
Which one are you?

This farmer had hectares but no direction. We gave him a land use plan, mapped his soil, found his water, designed every zone with purpose.
He didn't need more land. He needed a plan.
Let's build yours.
