Nansi Williams - the heroic dinner lady who died saving the lives of schoolchildren during the Aberfan disaster...
On October 21, 1966, a Welsh school dinner lady Nansi Williams threw herself over five children as a wall of coal waste crashed into their school. All five survived. She did not.
That morning, children at Pantglas Junior School in Aberfan, Wales, were preparing for their final day before the half-term holiday. Nansi, a local woman who worked in the school dining hall, was collecting dinner money from pupils.
Above the village stood enormous mountains of waste from the nearby coal mine. For years, residents had lived beneath them, despite concerns about their stability.
At approximately 9:15 a.m., one of those mountains collapsed.
Around 150,000 tonnes of coal waste and water surged down the hillside, smashing into houses and engulfing the school.
Inside, Nansi saw the danger approaching.
She ordered five children to get down, then threw herself over them, using her own body as a shield.
The impact killed her.
One of the children, Karen Thomas, later recalled how Nansi had jumped on top of them as glass shattered and the wall collapsed. The children initially did not understand that she was dead. They tried pulling her hair to wake her.
When rescuers recovered Nansi's body, accounts say she was still clutching a pound note collected for school dinners.
The Aberfan disaster killed 144 people, including 116 children.
An official inquiry later placed responsibility squarely on the National Coal Board. The catastrophe had been preventable.
Nansi had no children of her own. In her final moments, she saved five who belonged to other families.
For decades, her extraordinary sacrifice received little recognition beyond the community that remembered her.
Now, approaching the disaster's 60th anniversary in October 2026, a campaign to honor her has succeeded. A commemorative Purple Plaque is scheduled to be unveiled in Aberfan on October 30.
Five children went home because Nansi Williams never did.

The BBC put its news channel live on YouTube today. Now the plans are to make anyone watching it without a licence face a fine of up to £1000.
They already take £180 a year from people who still pay. Millions have stopped. So the answer from the people running it is to chase YouTube viewers instead of fixing the product.
Lisa Nandy’s department is working on a white paper before Christmas. Call it a YouTube tax. Call it whatever you want. It is still the same old demand: keep funding the BBC whether you watch it or not.
Britain does not need another way to get money out of people who already left.

Update: I understand another popup un-notified parade has taken place tonight in Bangor.
It was in protest at the PSNI decisions in Drumcree.
Loyalist sources tell me they will ignore the PSNI and the parades commission.
PSNI officers on the ground tell me they struggled to get an evidence gathering operation in place tonight @BelTel

🚨UPDATE: "Brave" victims were in court as Jeffrey Donaldson sentenced to 15 years in prison, with Judge saying he showed no "regret, apology or shame"
🎤 Chief Reporter @jamesgould23 reports from Newry Crown Court.
Former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a series of historical sexual offences against two women who were children at the time.
Judge Paul Ramsey told Newry Crown Court that Donaldson, 63, had shown no “regret, apology or shame” after being convicted of 18 offences, including one count of rape, earlier this year.
The judge said Donaldson had “doubled down on his denials” since his conviction for offences committed between 1985 and 2008.
“There has not been, and doubtless will not be, one word of regret, apology or shame from this man to at least provide his victims with some crumb of comfort,” he said.
Judge Ramsey acknowledged Donaldson's achievements throughout his political career but said he had now experienced a “catastrophic descent into disgrace”.
We hear from PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Leah Crothers and Catherine Kierans from the Public Prosecution Service's Serious Crime Unit.

THAT should be the story today. No distractions from the DUP regarding ‘rumours’ and ‘I believe I heard’.

One of the biggest threats to the imperfect peace on this island, is a tax funded 'journalist' ...let that sink in and then wonder who actually is pulling the strings and why 🤔

I know one thing, having watched what I watched on #NolanLive last night, if the programme had been about in the 90s, there would have been NO
"Peace Agreement" for NI.
Those who opposed the B/GFA then & still do today, would have been given a platform to scupper it !!!
