McBride et al.'s study concludes that reporting future financial concerns at baseline increased the odds of depressive symptoms at follow-up around 18 months later. This is highly relevant given the ongoing strike action by junior doctors and the cost-of-living crisis. #NHSpay
The findings stress the importance of addressing financial stressors in supporting NHS staff wellbeing. As highlighted in our policy institute summary, pay is only one part of the picture. Free parking and affordable food on site could also ease financial burden.

Quote from Rebecca Read, lead author of the study: "Throughout the different stages of the pandemic, NHS staff have navigated exceedingly difficult working conditions. Findings from this study suggest that staff from ethnically minoritised groups have also had to endure greater levels of harassment, discrimination, and a notable lack of PPE compared to their White British colleagues.”
