This is why I reject the framing that parents “don’t know any better” because it is simply not true. Children are the ones who are new to the world and, in fact, DO NOT “know any better.” They’re the ones who deserve grace as they navigate the world. Yet somehow when an adult who is grown and knows better in any given situation is flogged for misbehaving, we immediately recognise it as violence, but when the same violence is inflicted on children who are more vulnerable and know less, it is not violence; just “discipline.” It is lopsided and ridiculous. A child in his pampers was flogged on camera and this video was distributed to the public. No regard for what this could mean for him as he grows up. No one stops to ask what life would mean for us as adults today if our bad days as kids were displayed on the internet for the world to see. We do not see children as human beings.
