I had the honour of attending the meeting of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), chaired by H.E. President William Ruto in his capacity as the Chair of CAHOSCC, on the sidelines of UNGA 81 in New York. 🇺🇸
CAHOSCC brings heads of state together to provide political direction for Africa’s climate priorities. Ahead of COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, a central issue was adaptation finance: securing resources countries can access to prepare for climate impacts, and ensuring commitments already made are delivered.
This matters now because a potentially strong El Niño could bring severe floods and droughts to parts of Africa, putting harvests, water supplies and livelihoods at risk. At the same time, geopolitical tensions are putting pressure on the funding available to prepare. Adaptation finance can help countries strengthen early warning systems, protect water sources and support farmers before those losses occur.
The discussion also addressed the wider transition: expanding energy access, creating decent jobs and ensuring climate finance does not add to Africa’s debt burden.
As COP31 approaches, and with COP32 set to take place in Ethiopia, Africa has an important opportunity to advance a united position and press for decisions that make a difference beyond the negotiating room. #UNGA81

On International #YouthDay, my message to young peacebuilders everywhere: thank you for your leadership, commitment and resilience.
You are not the peacebuilders of tomorrow; you are building peace in your communities today. Your voice matters. #Peacebuilding #YouthPeaceSecurity
On this #InternationalYouthDay, I look back at the journey of supporting meaningful youth engagement with immense pride. We have turned the tide, secured wins for Environment/Climate governance, and proven that youth voices are unstoppable. But the fight isn't over!

We celebrate the energy, creativity and potential of young people on this International Youth Day 2026!
This year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” reminds us that while young people come from diverse backgrounds and communities, we share common aspirations for a better, inclusive and sustainable future.
The young people are partners in global development and champions of climate action, innovation, conservation and sustainable development. Their ideas, leadership and actions are essential in shaping a resilient future for generations to come.
Young minds. Bold actions. Better planet. Brighter future.

As Africa prepares for the predicted #ElNiño phenomenon during the 2026/27 season, early warning must lead to early action.
Governments, communities, and partners have a critical opportunity to act now ; strengthening preparedness, protecting livelihoods, and reducing the risk of droughts and floods before they escalate into humanitarian crises.
Through continental coordination and the Africa Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Early Action System (#AMHEWAS), the @_AfricanUnion continues to support Member States with timely climate information, coordinated preparedness, and resilience-building efforts.
Together, we can protect lives, safeguard food security, and build a more resilient Africa.
Prepare early. Act together. Build resilience.

The Africa Climate Change Dialogue on “Climate Governance Influence and Leadership Across Multi Sectors” brings together key voices from policy, science, and civil society to explore how Africa can strengthen climate leadership, accountability, and governance in addressing the climate crisis.
The dialogue features representatives from @EnviClimateC_Ke, @brianmounde
@GGI_Kenya @lizwathuti, and @MuiaAlphonce, Nzambi Matee for a focused conversation on advancing effective climate action across sectors and institutions.
The discussion highlights the importance of multi-sector collaboration, inclusive policymaking, climate finance, youth engagement, and strengthening governance frameworks to build resilience and drive sustainable development across the continent.
Africa remains one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change despite contributing the least to global emissions, making strong climate governance and leadership critical for adaptation and development.

I welcome the adoption of the General Assembly resolution on the @CIJ_ICJ's advisory opinion on climate change – a powerful affirmation of international law, climate justice, science & the responsibility of states to protect people from the escalating climate crisis.
Those least responsible for climate change are paying the highest price.
That injustice must end.

Despite its shortcomings, politicization, institutional biases, and inefficiencies, the work of the UN has been successful on many fronts, often despite having limited resources. It’s important to remember this when discussing the future of the UN, which just turned 80, and whether we need more or less multilateralism.
