5am on patrol, diligently spot a suspicious person, 3 uniformed Gardaí (who dont carry firearms), one only a trainee, end up in a struggle with a realistic firearm pointed at them. Despite all the industrial relations issues, still making sure all is safe jrnl.ie/7210902

🇮🇪 EuroCOP stands firmly alongside our colleagues in the Garda Representative Association (GRA) in Ireland. The decision by the GRA to take work-to-rule action during forthcoming EU Presidency events follows a clear and overwhelming mandate from its membership. 94.2% of those who responded to the GRA members’ survey supported industrial action, with 93.6% of respondents to the second question supporting work-to-rule action during EU Presidency events. This sends a powerful message about the depth of concern among Gardaí regarding their working hours, rest periods and the continued erosion of their terms and conditions. Police officers across Europe are regularly called upon to go above and beyond in the service of their communities. But their dedication and professionalism must never be taken for granted. Agreed working conditions must be respected. Rest periods must be protected. The health, safety and wellbeing of police officers must always be a priority. EuroCOP recognises the strength of feeling demonstrated by GRA members and fully supports their right to stand together and demand that their concerns are heard and addressed. We stand in solidarity with GRA General Secretary Ronan Slevin, the GRA Executive and every member seeking fair treatment, respect and the protection of their working conditions. Your voice matters. Your wellbeing matters. And you have the support of your colleagues across Europe. 💙 United in solidarity. Stronger together. @gardarep @AGSI_Ireland

I am the GRA representative referred to in yesterday’s statement. I welcome the withdrawal of the potential misconduct allegation, but I am bitterly disappointed that An Garda Síochána pursued it in the first place. I have spoken on many issues affecting members in the past. Elected representatives must be able to speak for members without fear that doing so will lead to misconduct proceedings. I will not be making any further comment on the matter.
A senior Garda Representative Association member will not face a misconduct investigation over comments he made to the media after an assesment on the matter has now been withdrawn, according to the association rte.ie/news/ireland/2026/092…

Stark details of the utter failure in garda pursuit policy & training, how risk aversion along with a bias against gardaí in prosecutions is making the working lives of gardaí almost impossible. GRA & AGSI members in Justice Committee. Will have a report on @thejournal_ie later.

Thanks PM Carney. Rest assured… the vast majority of Americans will never refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” Just like we will never call the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” There are still many of us who think of Canadians as our great friends. 🇺🇸🇨🇦
The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”. The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms. Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.
