I've worked with dozens of Growth PMs.
The best ones? They're not just data geeks.
(As a geek I say that lovingly).
They've mastered 5 underrated skills that separate the great from the good.
Here's how you can level up your Growth PM game 👇
1/ Systems Thinking: See the Forest, Not Just the Trees
Average PMs optimise features.
Great PMs optimise ecosystems.
🧠 Map out entire user journeys
🔄 Consider 2nd & 3rd order effects
🤝 Collaborate across teams
📊 Use causal loop diagrams
Remember: In B2B SaaS, everything is connected.
2/ Behavioural Psychology: Hack the User's Brain (Ethically)
Understanding what makes users tick is your superpower.
📚 Read "Thinking, Fast and Slow" & "Hooked"
🧪 A/B test psychological triggers
🔍 Analyse successful products
🤓 Take a behavioural psychology course
Pro tip: Don't forget team dynamics in B2B contexts!
3/ Data Storytelling: Turn Numbers into Narratives
Good PMs present data.
Great PMs tell stories with data.
📊 Create clear, impactful visualisations
🎭 Craft narratives connecting metrics to outcomes
🎯 Start with the 'why'
🗣️ Tailor stories to different audiences
"Stop presenting data. Instead, present the point of the data." - @milanicreative
4/ Cross-functional Collaboration: Be the Ultimate Bridge-Builder
In PLG, silos kill growth.
🗺️ Create a collaboration map
☕ Schedule regular catch-ups outside your team
📚 Learn the basics of each team's function
🤝 Set shared goals across teams
Remember: You're the translator between departments!
5/ Minimal Viable Testing: Learn Fast, Grow Faster
Forget perfection. Embrace scrappiness.
💡 Break big ideas into small, testable hypotheses
🚀 Get comfortable with "rough" tests
🗑️ Treat ideas as disposable
🛠️ Build a rapid testing toolkit
The goal? Maximum learning, minimum effort.
That's it! The 5 underrated skills that'll take your Growth PM game to the next level.
All easy in concept, but hard to master.
Which one are you going to work on first?
