It's time to get rid of this false dichotomy between "gifted education" on the one hand and "special education" on the other hand. Lots of intellectually gifted children have learning difficulties, and lots of kids in special ed are BRILLIANT.

This. I realize it isn't always possible but when it is, Get Out. Leave. Your kid is no one's new Audi. Defund the dam lawyers.
What's even more pathetic: the amount of money the parents' lawyers make fighting FOR the child. Here is my advice, take it or leave it: don't bother fighting-either homeschool; research, find a good District, & MOVE; or if you're one of the lucky & have money, private school.

People have no problem believing that you’re disabled if you’re blind, deaf, in a wheelchair, or you have missing limbs. But if you have an invisible disability? You’re deliberately lazy & forgetful. #Autism #ADHD #ActuallyAutistic

The one thing that I am now fully aware of is the complete lack of accountability on the Districts when they break Child Find, IDEA, FAPE, ESSA, etc. All the rules, mandates, laws, etc. mean nothing if the schools can so easily write them off. Wish I would have known 4 years ago.

I wonder and am asking those who are #ActuallyAutistic, #ADHD, #2E, or have kids who are 2E, your thoughts on the attached. While nobody is a one-size-fits-all definition, I am asking for thoughts on the overall, not a fully comprehensive, list of characteristics.

Interestingly, the "Gifted" qualities match most of the Dyslexic students I have worked with over the many years.
When will we stop focusing on the "bad behaviors" of students and try to see why they occur? When are we going to stop blaming the 2E, Neurodiverse, out-of-the-box children for not doing well in school and actually work on finding a way to understand, support, and educate them?

If praising children is powerful enough to lift their spirits, won’t criticism be powerful enough to crush? What an incredible responsibility us parents have to be intentional with our words.

It is our responsibility as educators to understand, support, and educate all our students. If we are not doing this, we are at fault, not our students. There are free trainings and books at the Library we can access to better understand our 2E/neurodiverse students.

Here’s another elephant 🐘 in the room‼️ Alternative education for the purpose of warehousing students is a major contributor to the widening achievement gap and educational disparities.
