Mission Critical

I'm writing this from Casablanca, on a 36-hour visit. My first time in Morocco. There's nothing quite like the excitement of arriving somewhere new. And every trip reminds me why seeing the world matters. It gives you perspective, and it puts you face to face with a different culture and a different set of beliefs. That matters to me because of what I do every morning. I'm not a journalist. I'm a collector. I consume a great deal of news so my readers don't have to, and there's a running order in my head that never quite switches off. I often go to sleep with tomorrow's lead story settled, only for events overnight to tear it up. The temptation is always the loudest story. I could fill five slots every day with President Trump and his grip on the news cycle. That would be easy, and it would be a disservice. Choosing what matters means knowing the world beyond your own front door. The Daily is written in London, but this year it has been shaped in Paris, Davos, New York, Tallinn, Milan, Marseille, Oslo, Luxembourg, Boston, Gibraltar, Zurich, and now Casablanca. Each place sharpens the judgement about what deserves your five minutes. Five stories. 7am GMT. Free, every weekday. (App Store links in the first comment)
