The irony is that if the SNP had governed with competence and for all of Scotland (without the toxic partisanship) a majority would probably consider independence as an option.

If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

NEW: The head of MI5 Ken McCallum has said Britons must increase their resilience and prepare to be “tested” by “escalating” Russian hybrid warfare. He warned the security service is now devoting more resources to hostile state threats than during the Cold War. “We have again entered a new era of national security, requiring a new response,” McCallum said in a speech at MI5’s headquarters at Thames House on Tuesday. “In this new world, we should expect to be tested,” he said. The spy chief called for greater “systemic resilience” of critical infrastructure, banking and defence interests, and better “societal resilience” against polarised online debate and radicalisation. “Our interconnected financial systems, energy grids, supply chains and manufacturing bases, designed during simpler times for maximum efficiency, are vulnerable to malicious disruption and coercion,” McCallum said. “Russia remains aggressor number one,” he said, warning the Kremlin is “using tactics that stop short, though sometimes not much short, of conventional conflict.” “In 2026, MI5 is devoting more resource to countering state threats than during the Cold War. Over the last decade, our state threats caseload has quadrupled,” he said. However, McCallum sought to present a nuanced assessment of the Russian threat, warning that Britain should not “fall into the trap” of letting Moscow’s hybrid warfare strategy “intimidate” it and leave the country feeling “beseiged.” That narrative would “do our adversaries’ work for them,” he said. On Iran, McCallum said the incident at RAF Fairford was not “unique,” suggesting Iran is targeting other military sites, though he downplayed its capability to pull off a sophisticated attack on British soil emulating Ukraine’s drone strikes on Russian airbases.  “2026 has also seen the Iranians, like the Russians, attempting to expand their hybrid campaign. Over the last 12 months, our Iran-linked operations have led to more than 50 arrests in the UK,” he said, adding that those in the Middle East responsible for directing the plots could expect an “unflinching response.” McCallum also said Britain needed to increase its “technological resilience” to combat dangers from artificial intelligence, announcing the establishment of an “AI Threat Assessment Centre.” In a sobering warning, he said “the misuse case to which I’d attach greatest weight is AI’s potential to change the stakes on existing or even new bioweapons,” citing concerns about hostile actors using AI to create “novel pathogens.”

YouGov - Sky - Times voting intention LAB 24%(-3) CON 23%(+3) RefUK 21%(-1) LDEM 12%(+1) GRN 11%(nc) Oct 11-12 Pollster note: The changes are within the margin of error, so it's difficult to distinguish signal from noise, but I suspect there is some degree of "conference bounce" there, with the Tories getting a boost from their coverage, and Labour declining again as the temporary impact of their own conference fades. It may well be a temporary Tory boost, but for the record it means this is the first time that we have had Reform back in third place since 2024 (it’s technically the first time since early 2024 – but we didn’t poll between the election and January 2025 while we were reviewing methods, so we don’t know exactly when Reform overtook the Tories).

This is a slightly surreal Commons statement from Andy Burnham The major unfolding Ukraine crisis on which the UK is expected to lead, and an Iranian state attack on Britain, have been mentioned only very briefly almost as causal asides Instead the PM is headlining this Commons statement, his first appearance in front of Parliament in weeks, on minor developments in EU relations that frankly pale into insignificance in comparison And even the EU section of the statement has been derailed because of the row over his Brexit/Russian interference comments

Who could actually become president from the Democratic side in 2028? -Josh Shapiro -Jon Ossoff -Gavin Newsom I am not sure Gavin can get the job because he’s been stuck in California politics for three decades and he might not see what Ossoff and Shapiro see. If you put a gun to my head, I’ve got it down to Shapiro and Ossoff. And I say that as a Republican. You cannot put another Republican in that seat right now because it’s running red hot with MAGA. Nobody can escape that brand. Here’s the deeper problem though. Trump showed every future president how to expand executive power. He went after the norms and standards of the presidency in ways no previous president dared. So whoever comes next has to be someone willing to do the antithetical thing: reconstruct the constitutional guardrails, give power back, and make things fairer. That’s a rare person, who do you think that is? 👇🏼

Ukraine’s freedom is not President Trump’s to bargain away. He is wrong to ease sanctions on Russian diesel, wrong to blame President Zelensky for prolonging Putin’s war, and wrong to undermine a nation fighting for its right to exist. Russia is the aggressor. Always has been. Reward Russia, and we should expect to see more aggression, including from other countries. We can also kiss goodbye to any just and lasting peace. This is why Conservatives have stood with Ukraine against Putin. Ukraine’s future belongs to Ukrainians. They alone have the right to choose their president, and we stand with President Zelensky because he fights not for himself, but for the survival of his country and his people.

This is a lie. Zelensky has repeatedly offered a ceasefire and the Russians have always refused

Russian strikes killed over 80 Ukrainian civilians in two days. Moreover, it has stepped up its hybrid attacks against Europe, both EU Member States and NATO Allies. Suspending sanctions on Russian diesel provides Moscow with more revenues to wage war. This is not the time to ease pressure on Russia, and Europe won’t. On Monday, EU Foreign Ministers intend to approve the biggest set of sanctions listings targeting Russia’s war machine since the start of the war.

My God, most of us who love football are outraged at the blatant cheating and lying detailed in the Premier League report. Andy? Not so much. For someone who is supposed to have a gift for understanding the public and communicating with them this is pretty dire.
🗣️ "I haven't downplayed the seriousness of the findings." Andy Burnham has addressed concerns that he devalued the verdict against Man City after the club were found guilty of Premier League financial rule breaches.

We love to see it.
Just hours after the U.S. eased sanctions on Russian fuel exports, Ukrainian attack drones struck the NZNP Rostovsky oil products export terminal in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don. The Russian fuel export terminal was set ablaze.

Peace never comes through weakness. Today, representatives of the U.S. Congress were in Kyiv – a bipartisan delegation – and I am grateful to them for visiting Ukraine at such a difficult time. They asked: what is needed to end the war? The answer must be strong. There must be sanctions under the Lindsey Graham bill, there must be support for Ukraine in protecting lives, and there must be pressure on Russia for its war. And today, there was a conversation between the leaders of America and Russia. A conversation that leads to something different. Recently, there was a European decision to lift sanctions on Russian oligarchs. Since then, Russian strikes and the torment of people have only increased. This past week alone, there was a brutal Russian missile strike on a residential building in Pryluky, aerial bombs were dropped on Kramatorsk – on ordinary city buses – and there have been constant attacks on Kyiv’s energy infrastructure and on the life-sustaining infrastructure in Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odesa, and our other cities. Dozens of people have been killed and hundreds wounded. The Russians are compensating for their inability to achieve their objectives on the battlefield with this kind of terror. This year, Russia is weaker on the battlefield than at any other point in the war. That is why Putin is relying on terror. That is why he is relying on attempts to strike backroom deals to secure some form of pressure relief for Russia, in order to buy more time and more opportunities for war. Any easing of sanctions against Russia without a clear and lasting de-escalation agreement with Russia is an obvious weakness. It plays into Russia’s hands – allowing it to kill more, wage war for longer, have even less respect for America, and inflict even greater losses and damage on the world. Ukraine is ready to take symmetrical de-escalatory steps, and the American team knows our position. Our strikes on Russian oil refineries and other oil facilities are a response to Russia’s years-long campaign of terror against Ukraine’s energy sector. Ukraine will not set Russian oil refineries on fire if Russia does not destroy our energy infrastructure. This is the kind of agreement we are proposing to America, and we believe the United States has enough power to achieve such a compromise. Gifts to Putin will not bring peace or any benefit to the civilized world. Russia will “repay” the diesel with further terror and perfidy. Allowing Russia to sell petroleum products is an investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged. What is needed is real de-escalation with Russia on a reciprocal basis. We count on America’s fair support for our defense of life, for our defense of people in Ukraine – and on the United States having a correspondingly strong conversation with Russia. A strong one, not a weak one.
