Indeed. The whole point of taking pride (“supporting”) in a football club in the early days of the sport was that the team’s exploits on the field expressed something about the menfolk of that particular area or town; thus, you might expect a tough game against the men in a mining town, and that toughness became part of the club’s identity. Everyone in the town could get on board with it. But just paying random global athletes to do that stuff for you is completely ludicrous when you think about it for more than a minute or two.
