The flyweights delivered yet again! Joshua Van continues to be everything we hoped he could be and more while Pantoja, at 19 years into his career, is an absolute dog.
Also, look at me getting this video down to a (hopefully) more watchable length.
The "List of Sumo Tournament Champions" on Wikipedia was recently updated to include the rank of each champion at the time of their victory. So we can easily see how many times each decade a Maegashira has won.

Would dearly like to see a pivot accompanying that lay back he does against the cross. He could have been punishing Pantoja's right hands from a deep angle and taken himself off-line for Pantoja's takedowns at the same time

That rear handtrap helped Van stop Pantoja from jabbing and opened up the 2-1 over and over again. If you get a beat on someone's jab, you can time that cross counter easier whether they throw first or not.

Despite it being straight crazy, I think Van going for opportunistic subs is hugely encouraging.
Shows that he's not disinterested in grappling like we've seen from lots of strikers.
That means he's going to put in the work in the gym to keep getting better on the ground.
