My eyes were wet from start to finish. I thought of being little in a big world & watching my son's first tries at this mad game. ESPN's Open to the NHL season is beautiful. I didn't expect to cry today-this is stunning. There's nothing like this sport. We at ESPN love the sport as you do. ❤️ Enjoy.

When I start teaching complex analysis on Monday, I've been wondering what to say to my class about why math is still worth studying in the age of AI. Here is Francis Su's (@mathyawp) answer: studying math develops human virtues like tenacity and creativity.
With the start of the semester just a week away, here’s what I decided to say to my upper division math course about how AI will or won’t change what they’re learning… The Enduring Value of Math, in an Age of AI francissu.substack.com/p/the…

This is the central problem with higher education in the age of AI. We can't require students to do take-home writing assignments (e.g. term papers) any more, because most will cheat and have ChatGPT or Claude or Grok do the writing. But we can't teach critical thinking, rationality, perseverance, & scholarship without requiring writing assignments that they work on -- researching, drafting, editing, revising, polishing -- over a period of days or weeks. The result may be a whole generation of students who can't really write, or think, or articulate what they really believe and value, and why.
Yes. Writing is not a second thing that happens after thinking. The act of writing is an act of thinking. Writing *is* thinking. Students, academics, and anyone else who outsources their writing to LLMs will find their screens full of words and their minds emptied of thought.

We practiced with caskets that were stored outside our barracks building. To simulate the weight of honored remains, we’d toss several full sandbags into the belly of the casket and then, for hours, we’d go through our exact movements. Over and over and over. (thread)

Here I am math tweeting on vacation but I can’t stop thinking about this…can a number theorist answer this for me? I hear people complain about how 2 is the only even prime and messes things up at times. 1/

A puzzle posed by my wife Barbara: two people climb a staircase and then climb an escalator. One person rests a minute on the staircase and the other rests a minute on the escalator, but otherwise they climb stairs at the same rate. Who is faster or are they equally fast?
