Listen to the emotional moment this year’s laureate Maria Corina Machado finds out she has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Kristian Berg Harpviken, Director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, shared the news with her directly before it was announced to the world.

In the past year, #NobelPeacePrize laureate Maria Corina Machado has been forced to live in hiding. Despite serious threats against her life she has remained in the country, a choice that has inspired millions of people.
When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognise courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist. Democracy depends on people who refuse to stay silent, who dare to step forward despite grave risk, and who remind us that freedom must never be taken for granted, but must always be defended – with words, with courage and with determination.

It is a historic day when an Afghan woman is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Women’s rights activist, Ms. Mahbouba Seraj is a finalist for the prestigious prize and I wish her luck in the selection process!
At a time when millions of Afghan women are oppressed & their basic rights have been taken away by the Taliban, Ms. Seraj’s win would prioritize the plight of all Afghan women and girls. There is no peace without justice for women and girls.
