On Oct. 8, 1871, the Great Michigan Fire swept across portions of the state, destroying communities including Holland, Manistee and areas of Michigan's Thumb. Happening at the same time as the more widely known #GreatChicagoFire, the disaster remains among the deadliest wildfires in Michigan history. Today, it serves as a reminder that emergencies can happen with little warning. Take time to build an emergency kit, create an evacuation plan and stay informed about potential hazards in your area. If you're near Manistee, visit the historical marker at Orchard Beach State Park, which commemorates those affected by the fire. Historic newspaper photos are provided by @HollandMuseum. @MichStatePolice | #ThrowbackThursday | #MiReady | #EmergencyPreparedness | #EmergencyManagement | #MichiganHistory | #wildfire | #greatmichiganfire

A group of hazardous materials technicians completed a three-day Highway Cargo Tank Specialty training at the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Training Center. This training teaches emergency responders how to safely handle incidents involving cargo tank trucks. They learn how to look at the situation, make a response plan, and use available resources available to help. After the training, responders can use these skills during transportation incidents in their communities to help save lives, protect property, and keep the environment safe. Tornado warnings often provide only 10–15 minutes to take action. During #NationalPreparednessMonth in Michigan, make sure you have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts and know where you'll take shelter before severe weather strikes.
