NOAA's Winter Forecast has a clear bias during El Nino winters... Ralph (@WeatherNut27) has created a visual comparison of their forecast vs what actually happened. Here, I have created an approximate visual representation of the average forecast error (actual − favored/expected tendency) during El Niño winters. Positive values (warmer colors) on this map indicate regions where actual temperatures were warmer than the forecast tendency implied; cooler colors indicate the opposite. Note: This is a qualitative composite for illustration, not a pixel-exact digitization. Conclusion: NOAA is often way too warm across the Northern US and too cold across the Southern US with their winter forecasts during El Nino years. NOAA's forecast error last winter was pretty dramatic for the Eastern US and the NW US. These two areas saw the complete opposite of what was forecast. #winteriscoming #wxtwitter #wxX

Halloween Storm? The long range CFS Model seems to be eyeing up a high amplitude (+PNA/-NAO) storm around Halloween that could have snow on the NW flank. (This seems to be at least in part due to a stretching of the Polar Vortex just prior to Halloween.) Now, as I'm sure you are all aware, just because a storm is shown on a model, doesn't mean it's going to happen, especially when we're looking at extremely long ranges like this... However, the CFS can be a good tool when it shows a consistent signal (as it is now)... it won't get the storm details exactly right at this range, but every once in a while it sees something first that then gets handed off to the medium range models like the European, GFS, Canadian, etc... I'll be interested to see if those other models start seeing a storm for Halloween once they are in range. #wxtwitter #wxX
