Why is this not a national news story? The citizens of Gary, IN are fellow Americans too. Hmmm….
🇺🇸 What's actually happening in Gary, Indiana: On Aug. 11, a derecho — straight-line winds, not a hurricane or tornado — hit northwest Indiana with a 99 mph gust clocked at Gary's airport (eight tornadoes were also confirmed across the NWS Chicago area). It caused the largest outage in NIPSCO's history, and Gary, a majority-Black city of ~70,000, was among the hardest hit. Over a week later, thousands are still dark. Power is being restored in stages — the utility targets near-full recovery by ~Aug. 21 — but many residents have gone 8+ days without electricity, food banks are overwhelmed, and a Gary woman experiencing homelessness was killed by flying debris. Two viral claims need context. A utility crew's vehicle was hit by gunfire once (Aug. 14) — a single incident that briefly paused NIPSCO work and was condemned by the mayor — not repeated "attacks on trucks." Claims of "daily looting" and "jets in formation" aren't supported by local reporting; the National Guard was deployed for storm recovery, and Gary's air show was canceled. Analysis: the real question isn't a "social experiment." It's why a poor, majority-Black post-industrial city sits at the back of the recovery line — an aging grid, a monopoly utility whose rates Gary's own council has formally protested, and the uneven infrastructure that decides who gets power back first. That's the accountability story. Sources: NWS/SPC; NIPSCO; AP; ABC7/CBS/WGN Chicago; Capital B Gary; Chicago Sun-Times

The State Department said it takes "full responsibility" for "hastily" altering and then presenting a map of Africa at a global AIDS conference that mislabeled every single country it highlighted. An analysis by Reuters found a watermark in the map image that suggests it was made with OpenAI.

🚨Anthropic just showed a 24-minute workshop on how to actually do prompts for Claude. Taught by the people who built it. Free. No registration. No paywall. I've seen $300 courses that don't cover what they teach in the first 8 minutes. Watch it and bookmark it now.

A 1-year-old child is dead after police officers in Mississippi opened fire on a vehicle in a crowded Walmart parking lot in Senatobia. His mother, who has not been charged with any crime, says she was trying to communicate to officers that there was a baby in the car. They fired anyway, leading to the death of an innocent 1-year-old. We intend to seek justice for baby Kohen and the life that was stolen from him.

Brionna Johnson was told she would have to end her pregnancy and undergo a hysterectomy. Instead, a 27-pound fibroid was removed while preserving her pregnancy and her ability to have children. Too often, Black women face limited options or are not heard. This outcome shows what is possible when patients are listened to and given real care. Equity in maternal care is not a luxury, it is a necessity.

In 1893, Frederick Douglass invited Ida B. Wells to lunch. She noted a place across the street, but indicated they would not receive service there. “Mr. Douglass, in his vigorous way, grasped my arm and said, ‘Come, let’s go there.’” Together, they “sauntered in...as if it were an everyday occurrence, cocked and primed for the fight if necessary.” Douglass grabbed a table and chair for him and Wells, as “paralyzed” staff looked on. A stand-off ensued with wait staff until the proprietor realized it was Frederick Douglass, and warmly welcomed him while sharing stories of a time past when Douglass visited his hometown. “When [the proprietor] finally went to another part of the room, Mr. Douglass turned to me with a roguish look and said, ‘Ida, I thought you said that they didn’t serve us here. It seems we are getting more attention than we want.’” Frederick Douglass spent his life fighting for justice and equality. He never knew the date of his birth. This is something he struggled with throughout his lifetime. Douglass believed that he was born in the month of February in 1817. In fact, records show that Douglass was born in February of 1818. He chose the 14th of February for his birthday because his mother would call him her “little Valentine." Unfortunately, Douglass never knew much about his parentage. His mother, Harriet, was sold off when Douglass was but a child, and he only met her a few times before she passed away. Though born enslaved in Maryland, he escaped as a young man and became a leading voice in the abolitionist movement.

Before she made history in space, Dr. Mae Jemison served as a Peace Corps Medical Officer in Liberia and Sierra Leone from 1983-85. On International Day of Human Space Flight, we’re honoring her path from Peace Corps service to becoming the first African American woman to travel to space and congratulating the Artemis II crew on their successful mission and safe return to Earth. You know, that world-renowned children’s research hospital that has treated patients from all 50 states and around the world for the last 61 years? The place where families never receive a bill, not for treatment, travel, housing, or food — so they can focus on helping their child live? Yep. That place." …for a handful of wealthy NBA players who claim to care about black lives and black entrepreneurship. But we know having premium spa access takes priority, isn't that right @KingJames, @anthonyedwards, @KDTrey5, and the rest of you wealthy players who don't have a real clue?

Mr. @KingJames is quick to dismiss the NBA market with the largest % of African-Americans, but clearly loves the culture that market produces. Yeah, Memphis doesn't have a five star hotel and needs one. Sounds like a good business opportunity… youtube.com/shorts/CR5shdBHF…
