⚠️CLAIM: Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader and Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Oginga is dead.
📌FALSE: The iVerify Network of Fact-Checking Desks has fact-checked this content and established that it is False.
🔍FACT CHECK: To arrive at this conclusion, the iVerify Network of Fact-Checking Desks conducted the following process.
To arrive at this conclusion, the iVerify Network of Fact-Checking Desks conducted the following process. The fact-checking desk reached out to the Communications Office of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party on October 7, 2026, which dismissed the claim and confirmed that Dr Oburu Oginga was alive. The confirmation was consistent with a statement issued by the Office of the ODM Party Leader on October 6, 2026, describing the reports as “malicious, unfounded fake news and propaganda.” The statement further said that Dr Oburu Oginga was observing doctors’ directives to rest and limit heavy physical engagements but remained mentally alert and engaged in party and national matters.

⚠️CLAIM: K24TV shares Oburu’s speech at Raila mausoleum handover
📌MISLEADING: The iVerify Network of Fact-Checking Desks has fact-checked this content and established that it is Misleading.
🔍FACT CHECK: To arrive at this conclusion, the iVerify Network of Fact-Checking Desks conducted the following process.
The fact-checking desk established that the remarks in the video matched a message prepared by ODM Party Leader and Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Oginga for the October 7, 2026 handover of the Raila Odinga mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi. However, Dr Oburu did not attend the ceremony, and his son, Jaoko Oburu, read the message on his behalf.
A reverse image search established that the video footage dates back to March 13, 2026, when Dr Oburu delivered the remarks during an Iftar dinner at State House Mombasa hosted by President William Ruto. The footage was subsequently published by several YouTube and Facebook accounts, including Kenya Digital News, Realtor Sitati, Uzalendo News and Radio Lake Victoria. K24TV also published the same footage on its YouTube channel on March 15, 2026.
The verification, therefore, established that while the remarks were genuine and prepared for the October 7 ceremony, the video footage was from March 2026 and did not show Dr Oburu speaking at the mausoleum handover. Its presentation in connection with the ceremony could therefore mislead audiences into believing that he attended and delivered the remarks there.
✅ Context matters, and recycling old archive footage to frame a high-profile event misleads the public.
