Faced with devastating famines, the USSR turned to Lysenko whose promises flew in the face of genetic science. Faced with a massive AIDS crisis, South Africa's Mbeki turned to those who denied HIV was a problem. Faced with COVID, H5N1, etc., the US may turn to RFK Jr.

Many of us share concerns regarding a second Trump term in relation to public health & biosecurity. Thanks to @MatthewField2 @BulletinAtomic for asking me to weigh in👇🏻 “As we face an ongoing H5N1 outbreak, persistent outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases, an erosion of trust in public health, a rise in dis/misinformation, and widening social disparities, we need leadership that will unite rather than divide. We are at a critical time in forming effective and pragmatic policies to address complex issues such as the ways in which developments in artificial intelligence (AI) will affect biosecurity, the safety and security around critical research of dangerous pathogens, the effects of climate change on infectious diseases, and the need to strengthen global health through equity and partnership. Developing policies in these areas will require strategies based on collaboration and evidence-based measures–not inflammatory, inaccurate, and harmful rhetoric that furthers partisan divides and enflames social discourse. It’s our responsibility to find a path that ensures the protection of public health and global health security. We’ve got a lot of work to do, and I fear a hard road ahead of us.”

In case you missed it, last week the WHO declared Egypt malaria-free. Evidence of the disease has been traced back as far as 4000 BCE and genetic testing found it to be the likely killer of King Tut. Read more here: thebulletin.org/2024/10/egyp… @BulletinAtomic
