Breaking cover on this garbage website to let those of you still here, stalking the ruins, know that I have a new book out.
"Tokyo Doesn't Exist" may be "Not a guide to music or cycling in Japan" but they're definitely a big part of it:

The book is a sort of travel memoir of when, 10 years ago, I spent about 6 months on and off travelling around Japan, investigating the local music scenes in every prefecture (except Tokyo).
The release coincided with a return visit to Fukuoka and Kumamoto, so here's the pics:

It was very nice to talk with the New Books Network about my biography of Adachi Masao. We had an hour-long conversation about cinema, politics, collaboration, problematic sources, and more! newbooksnetwork.com/pink-aut…

Looking forward to reading Ian Martin’s new, strikingly titled book, Tokyo Doesn’t Exist, a travel memoir and exploration of Japan’s local music scenes. (Full disclosure: Awai Books also recently published my book on Adachi Masao, Pink Auteur, Red Outlaw.) awaimedia.com/Tokyo_Doesnt_E…

My piece on Masao Adachi for Mubi Notebook: Demystifying a Legend. Labelled variously a provocateur, a radical, and a terrorist, the life and career of the iconic Japanese director is long misunderstood. mubi.com/en/notebook/posts/m…

Jean-Luc Godard's death in 2022 was said to mark the end of politically committed cinema.
In Japan, Masao Adachi — at age 87, stripped of his passport, still working — never got the memo: jacobin.com/2026/09/adachi-f…
Japanese filmmaker Masao Adachi spent nearly three decades in Lebanon alongside the Palestinian resistance.
Today, stripped of his passport and largely ignored at home, he’s making the most politically alive cinema in Japan at 87 years old. jacobin.com/2026/09/adachi-f…

Adachi Masao has been many things in his long life: underground filmmaker, theorist, radical activist - and wanted guerrilla in Lebanon with the Japanese Red Army. We review William Andrews' fascinating new book on Adachi's career, ethos, and radical activities, below:
